Default timing question

My car has a weird sputter and loss of power when i accelerate. Engine is a d15b1 with mpfi swap, converted to obd-1 I am not throwing any codes. When i set it to TDC i noticed that the rotor pointing to cylinder 3. In my haynes manual it says it needs to be at cylinder one. People have also told me it is ok if the rotor is on cylinder 3 when it id TDC. I'm hoping someone can clear this up for me.

I have no idea where the rotor button should be pointing. Remove the upper timming belt cover, and see how all the timming marks allign. The rotor position reallly doesn't show you dick.

actually yes it does. if number one cylinder is at TDC and the rotor is pointing at #3 terminal in the cap the cam timing is definately off, no IF ands or buts about it.
