Default Driving Impressions: New Spoon Header

Wow! Incredible!

The first thing I noticed after firing up the car is the beautiful sound - it has a hint of a deeper, lower tone and pulse as it idles. Revving the engine in neutral and the car sings - again with a nice deeper tone on initial application of the accelerator.

While driving the first thing I noticed was the reduction of weight in the front end. Was this in my head - maybe, but initial turn in felt more crisp and the car felt more responsive through the corners.

The car seemed to pull a bit harder below VTEC - but upon engagement of VTEC it really hits hard. The noise is more of a hard kick now. It is a glorious sound. The car pulls extremely hard from VTEC and it never stops to redline - a noticeable improvement throughout those RPMs that had a huge smile on my face.

I am very, very pleased with this piece. I look forward to taking it out and really running it for a longer test drive and getting on the dyno soon.

NOTE: I am running the Spoon header with a carsound cat from IPS Racing and the Comptech cat-back exhaust and stock airbox with resonator removed and stock tubing pulling air from near turn signal. There is a bottleneck at the cat-Bpipe connection that I hope to remove soon with another upgrade...

I'll be happy to answer any questions...

Sounds awesome man. Did you have the comptech exhaust modified to fit the carsound cat?

I knew you would love it...

Sounds like it compliments your current setup very nicely!

As for your observations on power, I agree totally. The Mid is alot stronger And it doesn't let up when you hit the redline. On the weight issue? I didn't really notice better turn in but, maybe thats because I removed my heavy wing and stickers about the same time and balanced the car out.

Good luck Flux, glad to hear you are pleased.

A.

PS, Isn't it great when you get good information/advice, learn some and make good decisions, and THEN you see/feel the difference with mods? Many Thanks to HondaTech...

Did you install the header and Cat. at the same time? I have a feeling that the change in your exhaust note is due to the fact that you ditched the stock Cat. Otherwise, enjoy the new toys.

You all motor guys never cease to amaze me with your $900 headers... I'd love to see a dyno with stock header, jdm 4-1, and then a spoon and hear the justification.

I just don't understand some of the mods. I guess everyone wants the best, but it seems to me that a jdm 4-1 plus some j/e 12.5:1 pistons would yield a lot more power at the same price.

do a search on the header test you'll see the difference.

I think the great header test proved that with bolt-on only R's, it's hard to differentiate between the likes of the $300 JDM DC Sports header and that of the $900 Spoon header. With mods like aggressive cams, everything changes. I chose Spoon myself so that my R will be ready to accept more aggressive mods in the future.

Mine does this too (althought my header is not the same as yours but still a 2.5" collector header). I thought the pulsing was from my valve adjustment. Phew, thank god I'm not the only one with this effect.

The first thing I noticed after firing up the car is the beautiful sound - it has a hint of a deeper, lower tone and pulse as it idles.

Oh I have seen the header test, a long time ago and then again recently. I think it proves my point too. JDM 4-1 plus high compression pistons would leave more power than a spoon header at the same cost.

To each his own. I love riding around in all motor c5 powered hatches, but I think sometimes people are fooled by a sound change and think there is a big power change. I have a friend that has somewhere around 3500 invested in an all motor Si, with a best time of 15.0. Spoon header, toda valvetrain, toda B's, mugen twin loop, chipped, you name it. He gained about 30whp with all of that, just seems crazy to me.

Spoon header + Carsound cat= 15 WHP....I'm happy with mine and i'm ready for future mods..A guy i know who's been drag racing for 15 years told me the other day "get the best parts from the beginning and you'll spend less money in the end". Advice worth considering

Thats why I am still sticking with my Spoon header. This year I will be aiming towards 220whp with more tuning.

Beside it hang kinda low, the Spoon header is very good for a relatively stock ITR.

Only the best from the beginning...

And no, I am not silly enough to be fooled by a change in sound - but I am familiar enough with my car and its feedback to me as the driver to be a fairly good judge of what it is doing on the road...

I plan on a dyno session soon.

Not calling you a liar or anything but do you have dyno plots to back up the 15whp claim with the Spoon header+Carsound Cat???

Uhh yeah, same here, wheres a plot to show 15WHP for these mods?

Did I miss something, because my Spoon header/94006 combo yeilded 6 WHP at best. The power through the middle of the RPM makes it worth it, don't get me wrong, it IS alot stronger but; "Where is my 15 WHP gain? I got jipped!!!"

In the header test by APE, the spoon header did indeed produce a 15 HP jump at about 5800 RPM, right at VTEC engagement. Stock was about 135 and Spoon was about 151. The JDM DC Header produced almost identical results at the same rpms and it a far better buy for the money. For serious all motor apps such as high compression pistons and cams, i would have to see the proof of a dyno to say spending the additional 500$ made the difference in the end. My DC and Cat combo made the same kick in the *** difference in sound and power. Dyno is also coming for these mods once the 310 CC injectors and VAFC are installed

What kind of ground clearance does it have? Could you post a pic of the header/cat..

Play around with the VTEC switch over with the VAFC can easily gain you 15-20whps at the VTEC point even on a relatively stock car!!
