How to identify worn Clutch release bearing

I just got a 1999 Honda Civic
It has in a B18C motor with a LSD box
It has a slight grinding sound coming from it
I start the car clutch down no sound .... when u release the clutch to either move off or to stand in nuetral and i hear the sound
is this the gear box , or the clutch release bearing

Don't know how much this will be but I had a similiar problem for about a year with my clutch after I installed it. It was an ACT 6puck non sprung clutch with a stock flywheel. Well just this past December I got on it, was going into 3rd and everything went to ****. When all was said and done, the rattling that I was hearing was my clutch rattling cause it wore down the spline of my transmission and the center of the clutch itself where the teeth are at wore all gone. But yes, if I pushed in my clutch when I was stopped, the sound would go away, but if it wasn't engaged, it was annoying as funk espicially between buildings and cars sense the sound just echoed off of the objects I was around. So yea, hopefully that helps and just to let you know as well, to get my transmission repaired with a new clutch ran me close to $1700. Hope that helps.

Incorrect. TOB's make noise with the clutch pedal depressed(while they're pushing on the clutch). His noise is with the clutch pedal released, which means the clutch is engaged, taking stress of off the TOB and spinning the guts of the trans. It's inside the trans. I'll put $20 on it.

I have the same problem and Im going to go with it being the throw out. Im just waiting to buy a new clutch to put in because if I have to pull off the trans I might as well pull a clutch in. especially if you arent going to DIY. most clutch kits come with a throw out. anybody heard of an xtd clutch (stage 2)?
twenty bucks says it not the tob....def isb
gotta take out the gears to get to it...cost around 30 for the bearing a 5 for a new isb seal...also replace anything else you can...

I'll second that. The TOB will not be making noise when sitting in neutral since it's not engaged.

You got the paperwork for that? Seems a bit high.

Yea, I actually have the reciept for the transmission job and clutch assembly in my glovebox. I don't have the reciept for the clutch and flywheel but that came out to be around $280. All in all it rounded off to around $1700 for everything.

I'm going through the same thing right now. Taking it to the shop later today to get it replaced, and possibly a new clutch.
