over-dempering... i really need your help
Hey guys,
I found myself in a stupid situtation... I've been learning race driving in my beloved ED6. added the koni yellows, then some unknown lowering springs, upgraded the engine... poli bushings all around, that kind of stuff. Since the spring rates are unknown, i decided to measure the rear one soughtly... i Ended up with just below 4kg/mm. Now those are a set sold to the general public, so I'd assume the fronts are stiffer .. maybe 6kg or somewhere there. Fron sway - 19mm, rear - 13mm
I've been driving this configuration and learning with it. The car is somewhat jumpy.. the back steps out easily in both the snow and on dry pavement, with any tyre from snow tyres to racing slicks.
Yesterday I drove an EF with its stock sways and 12k fronts and 8k rear. The car oversteers much LESS than my car and the ride is about twice more gentle than my car.
That lead me to the conclusion that I'm riding my car on the shocks mostly, not on the soft springs.
'nuf said, I'm now scared. I've been learning to drive a car that has very soft springs and very stiff shocks. In the upcoming month I planned to upgrade the springs to 8-9k front and ~10k rear.
I'm not sure what I'm asking you... honestly, I just feel that I don't know what's going on with the handling of that car and.... I know how i feel the car, but i don't know why? I thought it was because of the springs and now it appears to be because of the shocks... confused. Beside all that, I don't know what to expect from the new springs, since all I've been feeling up to now seems to be because of the shocks.
Any pointers of what I should be cautious about? The amateur racing season here is starting in about 2 months and i feel uprepared... would someone care to give me some pointers as I'm clearly going to move from a super over-dampered setup to a somewhat balanced one or even an under-dampered setup.
.... if you read all that I' suppose you understand how confused I am right now as i figured out I've drawn all my conclusions from a strangely setup platform :-/
should I expect more or less oversteer? my konis are the ones that are a pain in the a** to adjust so would you recommend and different adjustment with the 8f/10r springs? the shocks are currently fully stiff in the rear and about 2/3 stiff in the front.
please keep in mind i like rotation and oversteer, but i also love trail-braking.
Thanks for any advice guys.
