Default Synthetic oil life?

I don't drive my car much at all, just work and back, with the occasional things on the weekend. I'm using Mobile1.

I'm at about 4months with ~2k miles...when should I change it? Should I go by the 'oil life indicator'? Time? Miles?

Typically 5 months or 5K miles is the typical interval for fully synthetic oil. Changing it sooner won't hurt.

It depends on your driving style. My last maintenance indicator came up about 7k miles after the previous oil change. The one before that came 6k miles after the previous change. In my opinion just go by the maintenance indicator if all you do is daily the car to work, out to eat, etc. and if you don't beat on your car a lot. No harm in changing it earlier, but synthetic is there to last longer.

wtf? 3500 miles on synthetic?

lol

i drove 4500 miles on factory oil. the indicator was at 50%.

i plan on driving it til its at about 15% with the mobil1. probably gonna be close to 9000 miles.

this is synthetic oil in a new engine. 3500 miles? way to waste money and oil.

Maxing out your oil life builds sludge in your engine faster. Changing oil ahead of time isn't a waste of money....it's a preventative maintenance and something everyone should do.

Don't you dare be a smartass to me. Believe me you don't wanna go that route. You're not understanding what i'm saying....and I sure would like to see how BLACK your oil is when you wait until 9,000 miles to change it.

Not to mention....Honda could potentially use that 9K interval AGAINST you in a warranty claim if problems result with your car. And you could claim that it's what your Maintenance Minder system said.....but you can't prove it since it's already been reset from the new oil change.

The maintenance minder is just that...a REMINDER....just in case the miles of usage slips your mind or the next-due oil change sticker in the top corner falls off.....or if you forget when your next oil change is due. It's perfectly fine to go by the maintenance minder. But like I said......DON'T MAX IT OUT. Don't wait until it reaches 5% or 0%.......or even 10% to change it out......do it when it's at 20% or higher (depending on months of usage) so that you can keep your engine components as clean as possible to maximize the life of your car. And remember that there is more to engine oil than simply how long it takes to break down. It also gets dirty and contaminated over time. Something the Maintenance Minder DOESN'T detect. It just puts out a recommendation based on driving style and situations. Changing out the oil sooner (before the Maintenance Minder is low) helps to keep dirt and contamination buildup out of your engine.

That's MY recommendation. Now you're certainly welcome to do things your own way.

People make the mistake of relying too much on computers these days when good ol' fashion intuition and common sense tells you that doing things AHEAD of time tends to work out better in the long run.

5 MONTHS or 5k MIles is preferable. Not sayin it won't last longer. O by the way, Mobil 1 says its fully synthetic, but its not. Still great oil. Its wat i use

EXACTLY!!! Finally, someone else that understands this.

Very common misconception. Synthetic oil takes longer to break down thus runs CLEANER. In turn, I guess it means it could last longer. But the real reason that people use it in their race cars, is that it is much more stable than conventional oil, and has much better viscosity, in all temperatures. It resists the things like thermal breakdown, sludge, and burn-off/evaporation.

With conventional oil, if you change your oil at 3k miles, it is probably black and sludgy.

At 3k miles (with synthetic), you could check your dipstick, and still have clean oil. But if you wait until 5k miles, even the synthetic oil is most likely going to be dirty. Dirty oil is ineffective oil. That's why changing your oil "early" is a good thing. I use Mobil1 oil and oil filters in every oil change, and I usually change in 3700-4500 mile intervals. I check my oil every day, so if I see that it isn't clean anymore, I change it.

IMO- 3k miles is too long for conventional oil.

I never knew that... .. I ran castrol fully synthetice for two oil changes and 6k miles.. then ive been running on mobile one for probably 4 or 5 changes.. I understand that once u go synthetic u cant go back so is this really bad i went from fully to mobile one? What should i do if it is?

As far as I'm concerned Mobil 1 IS fully synthetic. Unless someone can produce evidence suggesting otherwise.....and not just a blind claim.

That's a myth. Synthetic and conventional oils are perfectly compatible. Supposedly, there will come a time when the new ingredients in synthetic oils will not be able to mix with conventional oils, because the those ingredients will be so exotic or something, but that time hasn't come yet. You have absolutely nothing to worry about.

i think its funny that u laugh. cuz my indicator came on 3500 miles after my last oil change. and put simply, i hit the canyons everyday to go to work and on the weekends.
and i dont take it easy when i go through there.

Not to sound mean or anyhting but

FU*K ALL THOSE THAT USE M.O.B.I.L 1 and still spell it as MOBILE 1. WTF that just pisses me off.

M1 just as many others are hydro cracked oils. They can be considered and labeled fully synthetic even though in reality they aren't. They are better then conventional oil though but they are not what they use to be, Only a few group 4/5 synthetic oils still are available but they are hella expensive so ill stick with my M!.

CARE TO ELABORATE ON THAT STATEMENT INSTEAD OF JUST THROWING THINGS ONTO THE SCREEN????? HOW BOUT SOME SUPPORTING EVIDENCE OR LINKS TO BACK IT UP. NOT THAT I'M DOUBTING YOU OR ANYTHING....BUT SOME PROOF WOULD BE NICE.

Did the government relax their standards on the definition of "fully synthetic"? Are there new ways of testing the oil? Are the companies just lying and nobody is regulating them??

Care to name the oils that actually are truly fully synthetic....instead of just saying they exist.

Things like that would help alot!

And get off your mighty Clydesdale....ONE person mistakenly spelled it as "Mobile"....ONE TIME. Big deal....that's not the focus of the thread!

** ahem **

That is all!

group 3 oils were not labeled fully synthetic back in they day. it was until M1 sued Castrol for labeling their Group 3 oil fully synethic. M1 lost so many oil started to label their g3 oil fully synthetic to save some money while making worse products.

If you Google m1 vs castrol lawsuit im sure there will be some info on that.

Amsoil, torco, Redline, Rp
are still group 4/5 oils

M1 extended performance is said to be in these group also but i cant prove that.

I was disappointed with RPs performance, for the price. I used it for a couple oil changes a couple years ago. It performed (mileage before it started to break down) only just above Mobil 1 but for a major premium. It is a great oil, and if it were the same price as Mobil 1, I'd use it. But Mobil 1 is an amazing deal, no matter what class it is in.

I'm experimenting as well. If i'm not satisfied with it then i'll switch back to Mobil 1.
