Okai so basically...
I had a d16z6 engine in my si hatch.. and the rod blew... started with a knock untill it just died....
the engine has sat outside.... with out a valve cover for about 8 months...
So basically.... will a hone do the job? bigger pistons if I need it bored...?
or should I just trash it.



This seems to be the only cylinder that water didnt get into

I guess you could rebuild, but it would have to be a whole rebuild. You might need to check the crank to make sure the bearing that went out didnt scar the crank to badly.

 

Yeah I planned on a whole rebuild
I was thinking of sleeves too..
I wouldnt mind doing all this... plus I will be able to get some wrenchtime INSIDE of an engine.

 

oil pan is comping off in a couple of days.. I just need to go pick up a stand..

 

i would just pick up a long block and call it a day.. so much cheaper now a days

With how cheap D series longblocks are, i would just snag another one rather than dealing with that rusty headache.

Depends on your location.

Around here you can pay 7-900 for a good cond. Z6.

Probably just over 1k for one with a warranty.

So it really depends on your location, you won't good cond. Z6's for 300 bucks growing on trees here.

Also, as the demographic here is white *** rednecks with American flags on the back of their domestic pickup trucks, the Z6 is rare as **** around here.

You said he blew a rod? Yet the block is still intact? That's pretty rare, usually it puts a hole in the block or at least dents and damages quite a few things.

In any event. Yeah, you can just hone that out. It's most likely just surface rust. I don't even think you need to go bigger pistons unless you need to bore it.

The owner of the machine shop will be able to take one look at it and tell if you if it needs to be bored or not.

 

If i were currently in the same situation, you'd find me looking for a stock lower mileage GSR motor and being done with things.

well if you said you were sleeving it, its gonna be just as much if you were to buy a long block and sleeve it or sleeve this block. with a good hottanking and that block should be ok. as long as if there isnt any dents from the rod blowin out or any cracks, it should be fine. with a little fresh oil on your finger, most of that rust will come right off.

 

Well guys it was my mistake... I believe I spun a bearing not blew a rod...
However it started with a knock. then it just seized..
And guys..
A gsr long block is a lot more expensive then a z6... come on its 1300-1500 at least for a gsr long block..a new z6 will be 650 AT MOST.... and thats for a zc vtec..d15b 400...
Depending on how things look when I take this thing apart.. I'll know what Im gonna do.

 

i would save your money for a B Series.

ZC's and D blocks are dinosaurs, theres no power to be made with them.

a built D block would be lucky to make the power a stock GSR does.

im talkin NA here too.

Im somewhat sitting on the fence with this one. It doesnt cost you any money other than the stand if you pull the motor apart and inspect every other component.

The problem with either finding a complete longblock or going B is not only $$$, but when you go to purchase a used engine, you run the risk of getting scammed... at least here in So Cal. Not to mention that the So Cal Marketplace is dead and nobody is selling anything.

I recently sold my D16z6 longblock with 190k, axels, mounts, shift linkage and harness for $325 and the motor ran like a champ.

If you pick up a longblock the chances are that it will be high mileage and need the normal maintenance ie headgasket, timing belt and water pump.

Then if you buy a used JDM Bseries longblock or USDM longblock you run the same risk... scams and preventative maintenance, which all adds up to $$$$.

I just picked up a B18b longblock from Hmotors and spent $300 easily on top of the $750 I paid for it replacing the oil pump, oil pan gasket, headgasket, water pump, IM gasket and VC gaskets and not to mention the plugs, wires, cap and rotor etc etc.

If I build the block it will be for turbo...(unless I just use this block as a back up when its time to build my zcvtec....If that is the case.. I might just slap some zc non vtec pistons in this block..for some nice high compression..)Which would only be temporary untill my block and turbo are done.

With the 2500 it would take me to complete a gsr swap...
I could have a fully built turbo single cam....

BTW the oil pan came off today.. and there were deff some thing (very thin) pieces of metel in and around the oil pick up..
But tomorrow I will have the main cap off to check out the crank and cylinders.. and well the inside of the block

Trash It... Pickup a good working one or get something from Japan JDM d15b Vtec is a good motor $488 to the door, low miles and tough not bad for turbo either as long as your not boosting the **** outta it. Good luck

 

it would probablly be cheaper to pick up a running D16 then to rebuild that one..
