Default ATS 4.9 Final Drive & MFactory Close Gear Ratio Set Compatible?

I recently got my USDM '97 ITR transmission overhauled and decided to upgrade the final drive and the gear sets. Got the ATS 4.9 FD and the MFactory close gear set which consisted of 3rd 4th, and 5th. After the mechanic finished the job and I went to drive the car around, I noticed a whining noise coming from 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th gear. To give you an idea of the whining noise it sounds similair to going in reverse, kinda like a straight cut gear but the MFactory gears that I bought are not straight cut. The noise is most noticeable in 4th. When the tranny was pulled apart the syncros were fine along with the bearings. I am wondering if anyone here has a similair setup and know of any fitment or clearance issues. I am really worried that if I keep driving the tranny will blow.

TIA

The final drive, 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th are all Semi-Helical, this is why you are hearing a whining noise.

If you compare the final drive and gears to oem, you will notice that they are not as slanted as the oem gears.

The less angle the gears have, the noiser they will be, hence why straight-cut gears are the noisiest.

I called MFactory in Bellingham directly and spoke with a tech and was told that they've installed the close gear set onto multpile cars and that they should not emit any noticeable sounds at all.

Seeing how you are from MFactory as well, is there anything in particular that should be done before throwing the gears in perhaps?

I can sort of understand if there is a slight noise from 3rd, 4th, and 5th but the first gear which is a JDM ITR gear which was needed for the ATS also emits the same noise. On top of that, each of the gears mentioned has different levels of whining noise having 4th the being the loudest then 5th, and 1st and 3rd being similair. When I say 4th is loud, it's along the same line as being in reverse. I honestly don't think the gears should be exhibiting these levels of whining noises.

If there are certain issues with a USDM ITR transmission installed with ATS 4.9 final drive and MFactory close gear set then hope I can be notified ASAP. I hope someone out there can share some more insight into this.

TIA

Although there may be a noticeable whine, you may not hear it at all either, as the oil drowns out a lot of the noise.

There are no issues with using the ATS 4.9 along with our gear set as our gears are direct replacement with the factory items.

I didn't realise though that it was the oem 1st you had, I thought you had the ATS 1st as well, my apologies.

This should not whine at all and should just be like stock. 4th gear should also not whine like reverse.

What gear oil are you using in your transmission?

My suggestion would probably be to rebuild your transmission again and double check everything over

+2 to tearing the trans down to inspect everything.

My MF gearset whines. Whining from the gears is not a problem. If the whine is coming from somewhere else, then there is a problem.
