Is this a legitimate shop? Or just a guy in his garage?
You really need to post extensive details on your current motor: Hole in piston= Damage to bottem end, possibly head.
As a rule I stick with dealing with reputable shops for any type of engine work. There are far too many stories on here and other forums about people spending thousands of dollars on a motor build only to be left with nothing, or an engine that only lasted several thousand miles.

Yet he is charging you about the same amount as a shop would charge for the same service. If I where you I would take it to a reputable shop that will give you a bill of reciept and back up their work if anything goes wrong.

I wouldnt risk that dude, Paper signed or not.. it will never be the same R if its stolen. I'm sure you can find a jdmitr long block for around 2k. only 500 more than the price to rebuild.

which means what? he goes to a random house, gets out and waits for you to leave? Its really his buddies house? Your not being very smart about this....guys don't spend hours rebuilding motors for that cheap unless the work is rushed and half-assed.
What if you need new valve seats cut? What if he doens't inspect the block fully and you have a busted block for one reason or another?
If you honestly think you will hold him liable for your motor blowing up again in 2 weeks, than I must laugh at you. You will spend more money in court and time than if you had just gone to a good shop and let them do it. If you wanna save yourself good money, pull the motor yourself, strip the head and block bare, and take it to a shop to a well known shop.

Yes. This is not a smart move but it seems that you have made up your mind already. So what do we know?

dude if there are no good shop where you live, you would be better off tearing the thing apart and doing it yourself, or buy a $500 bare block from somewhere and build it. Either way, if you take your time and read and make sure you do it right, theres no reason you can't do this all yourself.

Sounds like its best to save a few bucks, have your 'connection' build your engine so you can keep it real.
Good luck with that...
