When I worked at a salvage yard we used either Dayton Freight or R+L carriers. The max weight limit through UPS is 150lbs, which I believe most, if not all Honda manual transmissions fit this requirement. You can also ship it freight by using a local carrier, but it will probably be more if it is shipping to a residence.

My D16Y8 tranny weighed something like 75-80lbs. I used a large moving box from the U-Haul store and lined the bottom and sides with extra cardboard. I used industrial shrinkwrap plastic(that you wrap boxes on a pallet with) to wrap the tranny and filled in most of the empty space with cardboard folded into various shapes. I had a lot of packing pellets(peanuts) on hand, so i dumped some of those in to fill any remaining voids, although you may not want to do this if you aren't going to wrap the tranny since the peanuts will get inside it. I used plenty of good quality packing tape to seal the box and ran some around the middle of each side to reinforce it. I think it cost $80-100 to ship it from CA to FL via UPS Ground, and I assume it made it without incident since the buyer didn't complain.

Go to a moving coming and ask them for a used fiber board box. They have a higher weight rating than a normal box. They should give it to you for free. (If you can't find one, get a box that has a rating of at least 100lbs.) I put a 1/4" piece of plywood in the bottom of the box.

I typically wrap the tranny in a couple heavy mil trash bags and tape it up. Then I spray in foam in the bottom of the box and let it harden. Don't fill like crazy...just enough to make it solid. Then the wrapped up tranny in the box with the opened bellhousing side down. Then spray foam all around it. When the foam has hardened, I install another piece of wood on the top.

I have shipped 15 or so trannies this way and although it may be a little overkill and anoying to unwrap, it works great and keeps trannies in good shape. I only use FEdEx ground and it runs anywhere from 30-80 bucks depending on where in the states I am shipping it. Never had a broken/lost issue yet.
