your fan relay might be out or your fan motor, check the fan by pulling it out and connecting it to a positive wire and negative wire to the batt if it spins then its fine...then that means it probly is your realay which is located in front of the battery (mounted toward the front) if you think your head gasket is blown take the oil cap off and see if its a milky color brown if it is then its all bad..

if you paid 1000 bucks for a headgasket repair job, you'd be an idiot. just get some basic hand tools and a manual and do it yourself in a weekend. is there oil in the coolant? or visa versa? thats one way to tell if its a blown gasket. or can you hear a sucking sound coming from where the head and block are together?
how to remove and replace head gasket.

lots of white smoke out of the exhaust, low on coolant, and overheating sounds like headgasket to me.

check to see if your coolant has oil in it and vice versa.

same the symptoms sound like a blown headgasket, if you get it fixed now before it causes any major problems it shouldnt be too expensive, definently not 1k

Headgasket sounds about right, or it overheated from the fan not working too many times and possibly warped the head. good luck
