I'm in the process of rebuilding my b18c5, this will be my first rebuild. I've been doing research for the last few days on bearing clearances etc. ACL bearing are advertised as 1 size fits all. My question is ... What percentage of the time do the ACL bearings have the proper clearance? (.0012 to .0017 if im not mistaken) Also if you put these bearings in and your clearance is too loose or too tight on say 1 of your mains and two of your rods what should you do? Order Honda bearings that will yeild the correct clearance?... will that cause issues (are the honda bearings made out of differant materials? Will differant materials cause issue's? I've seen this question get asked in a few threads I have read while searching for these answers, but I haven't seen it address yet. Like I said I have searched but wasn't able to find this information. If it is somewhere else please just give me the link. I appreciate those of you that take the time to help me out and thanks in advance.
I dont have any numbers percentage wise when ACL's offer the correct specs, i think they are good for mild street rebuilds. Verify the clearance is OK with plastigauge. Technically, though, Honda doesnt make their own bearings, so people touting that OEM is the only way to go bearing wise arent really 100% aware of this I guess. A good trick that i alluded to in another thread that pertains to this sort of rebuild, is, since the crank and block were originally fitted together in your case, you can play the Honda numbers/colors game to find out which bearings Honda would have you use (or just note it as they come out of the block) and then use this guide and go one or two steps looser for some additional clearance. Thanks man. If I do go with acl's and have to replace a few that dont fit right is it ok to pic up the OEM ones and mix and match between the two differant manufactured bearings?

It is ok to mix and match honda bearings within the guidelines earl pointed out. I would not mix and match between manufactures (acl, honda, etc).

So are ACL bearings the correct fitment such a large percent of the time that everyone that runs them has all their mains and rods within clearance spec from one size bearing?

Your best bet is to check your specs if the acl bearings won't work try what he said

Damn, I wish I had kept my bearings in order as I took them out. Unfortunatly for me though I took them all out and threw them in a box. I'm gonna order the ACL bearings, 55 bucks shipped isn't too much damage. Thanks for everyones help.
From what I've seen Acl's only work when your bearings are in the middle of the color chart ie Green or yellow. If you've got Browns, or Blacks you're throwing the dice clearance wise. I think thats why guys say to stick with honda bearings. Even though the difference between a green and a yellow is slight. Its good to know that with different colors you can get uniform clearances as opposed to a one size fits all deal.
remember if the std ACL bearings come up a little tight, there's always the Race ACL HX bearings that are .001 or .0001 i believe thinner than the std. ACL's ...

Thanks guys. I decided to go with OEM bearings. ACL sounds like to much of a hit or miss deal. They are in expensive but if i have to go out and buy oem's afterward i still miss out in the long run.
