Default bottom end rebuild questions

ok, so im about to rebuild my bottom end of my 2000 em1 and i was wondering what pistons would be best to ge t a really high compression. im thinking weisco cuz they last long. also what bore size would be good to get it to 1.85-1.9 liters? is that even possible to bore it out that much? i dont really know much, so if someone can enlighten me, then that would be nice. thanks

You do not need 'really high compression' to make very good power. The correct selection of parts combined with a soundly built bottom end will take you far.
Use the search terms 'sleeved' and 'stroked' (and variations of those terms) to get information on how to increase your displacement.

i dont want to do a b20 or lsvtec..not reliable. so i should sleeve it at like 84mm. well whats stroking anyways? is it the same as sleeving?

umm. there's no reason a b20vtec / lsvtec wouldn't be reliable if you built it right... and do a little searching on stroking and sleeving. a little reading will do wonders especially if its not spoon fed to you.

wow, news to me. whats not reliable? How many have you built and ran that blew up or fell apart? Now that you said that I should go pull mine out and get rid of it before it leaves me stranded

You are at a disadvantage because you have a B16A block, and it has a shorter deck height than it's 1.8 liter counterparts. This is detrimental , because, to put any real stroke in it, youll have to get a custom piston. Which isnt a negative in itself, but it sounds like thats not what youre looking to do.

On a sidenote, it sounds like you are a victim of misinformation regarding LS/VTEC's and B20/VTEC's. When they first came around, and people were just sticking VTEC heads on 90k+ stock LS and B20 blocks and revved the **** out of them, bad things happened. But the average Honda builder is smarter today, I hope, and with more quality products at his disposal; there is no reason an LS/VTEC or a B20/VTEC built properly couldnt rival an OEM unit as far as longevity is considered.

Hope this has helped.

hmm your right. i guess i am at a disadvantage. but i wanted to do a b16 build cuz i see a lot of ppl do a gsr and b18c-5 cuz its easier and they are bigger. iunno, yea and your right about me being a victim of misinformation about lsvtec and b20vtec. cuz everytme ive heard about both of them, i havent heard of anything good about them . basicly, if you dont do it right from the ground up, to the last wire things will go wrong. and i dont want to go thru the hastle of dealing the b18b cuz as you already know, im not so mechanically inclined cz i dont really know what stroking is. it seems as if stroking and sleeving is the same thing. well i kinda know about sleeving, and i know id have to sleeve it pretty big to even get my block to that of the gsr. but yea, iunno. back to the question at hand, i should prolyl sleeve my block with darton mids, closed deck and bore it as well. but i dont really know much about how to bore to a certain mm and what compression would be best for my biuld. if any of this makes any sense, please reply.

freebie:

sleeving - putting new sleeves in your engine to expand the amount of material you can safely bore out of the cylinder wall.

stroking - changing the "stroke" of the engine or how far the piston travels up and down in the cylinder. from changing rod length / crank.

as for compression. that depends on the car's useage and the fuel available. assuming its going to be a daily driver and you have 91 octane available, i would go no higher than 11.5:1.

hope that helped clarify a thing or 2 for ya.

yes it did. well now i have no more questions. thank you very much. you are right, this car is going to be a DD, so with that being said, i know what to do.
