Default speedometer problems..please help

about a year ago when i had my si tranny, my speedometer just suddenly stopped working. i got a new (well, nused) DX tranny and my speedometer was working fine for a little while and then it stopped working also.

i checked the tranny where the speedo cable goes in, and the cable seems like its in all the way, but i can pull it out with ease. isnt it supposed to be held in there by a clip or something?

i was thinking about taking out the guage to see if its a problem there, but do you guys have any suggestions?

maybe new speedo cable? could the speedo gear be a problem? how would i know for sure? i am gettting code 17, vehicle speed sensor...

thanks

the cable has to go in a certain way inside the trranny. make sure its on the right way..... then maybe that sensor got bad and thats why u got the 17 code..... if nto check behind the dash...

yes there is a small clip that holds the cable inplace.if the cable falls out it will not work.

I tried driving around the block without the cluster just to see if the cable is actually turning...it took a couple of times to actually push and pull the cable from the dash to make it work.
