is there a DIY or how-to on fingerprinting your car
I'm just wondering if anyone who might be a police officer or know one can tell me what is best for lifting fingerprints from the car.
My car got broken into last night by prying the window open and then unlocking the car with a hanger or hook from the outside. Since i haven't had time to fix the alarm's over-sensitivity, i only had it on 'keyless-entry' mode, so now I'm out one Premier DEH-860MP

They left some really good prints but Sac PD is lazy as all hell and they can't get to it until Monday and there's a storm about to roll in. I want to lift the prints myself.

honestly, i really dont think that the fingerprints that you pull are going to be valid to any law enforcement. its pretty unlikely that youre ever gonna see that deck again or find out who jacked you. theives can suck on one, but you gotta take precautions so you dont become a victim. sorry bout your loss bro.

Please let this be the last time anyone mentions me taking precautions. Thanks.
I'd like to think that the prints would be more valid than nothing at all. I can just simply video tape me pulling the prints and submit the tape and the prints. It can't be worse than being an eye witness or turning in evidence to cops.
Point being, I would just like someone to tell me the best way to pull prints.

Second, I'm not going to be looking for them. What WILL happen is thieves usually work a location constantly. If, in the event they are caught or, in a more likely event they have a record already, police can press charges for up to 7 yrs. The amount of stuff stolen catagorizes this as a felony which i believe stretches the time even further.
The fact that they left a couple GIANT prints tells me that although they know Hondas/Acuras, they're amateur criminals.
Do i get justice? Maybe so maybe not. Do i have peace of mind i did everything i could to catch them? Yes.
Third, i have people in the oakland PD and Sac PD depts that I can find info from if these prints come up with any names.

I guess for anyone that cares, my boys' mom got back with him ( Oakland PD ) and said there are police supply stores that you can simply buy the kits from or go to Michaels and use powder and transparent double sided tape.

First off I would like to formally tell you to expletive off.

Police have a chain of evidence. You can't simply video tape you lifting the prints. The police won't accept these prints, nor will they hold up in a court of law. The Sacramento police department isn't being lazy either, they have real crime scenes to investigate.
However if you really want to waste your time lifting the prints, your going to want to brush some type of fine powder over the prints, something that will adhere well to the oils in the surface of the print. Then take a piece of transparent tape (Probably packaging to cover the full size of the print but scotch should work)and lay it on the surface of the print, then stick the tape onto a piece of white paper.
This however does nothing in proving anything, and will never even be accepted into evidence.

Any fine powder should work, talcum, cocoa, etc.

True, they're not being lazy, that's just my anger at the sitation in general. Well I've just decided to garage the car until monday. Hopefully they'll be able to do it then.

Ok, to reiterate my point, I'm not trying to get my stuff back. I know it's gone. I'm just trying to see if I can provide the police with evidence.
So anyways, here's what I've heard, which has conflicting reports. I've heard from a detective that you CAN fingerprint IF you take detailed before, during, and after pics which clearly show the fingerprints to be the same in each pic.
As far as dusting for prints, you can use a very fine brush from a hobby store and either talcum powder ( for dark surfaces ) or the ink based stuff the cops use.
Since i'm sure laws vary as well as a DA's willingness to accept what you have AND if you might have a history ( grudge ) against the other party, I'd probably just say that if you're like me ( Police won't come out to fingerprint, fingerprinting place is closed for the weekend and it's raining outside. ) You're better off dusting and putting down the tape, and then letting the cops lift it themselves.

scribe your drivers license number on your headunit next time, when these theives get caught by the police they will track you by that number. also no one will buy your headunit if your number is etched on it
