the engine im going to get has already pass smog and it has papers.its a 96 gsr engine and i want to put it in my 98 LS. is it leagal to do that and even though it pass smog already when i put it in my car will it pass?
It depends if you want to just do the swap or get your car BAR approved? When I lived in CA, smog inspection was every other year or so. The 96 GSR motor should be able to pass the snifer test if your car is maintained and you keep all the stock smog equipment. It just depends if the smog station decides to look at the engine code and match it with your vin.
If you want to get the swap BAR approved, that is a different story. I am not too sure if the swap would be BAR legal since you are putting an older engine in the car. On the other hand, you will still be OBDII and I don't know if there were any changes to the GSR motor between 96 and 98.
