deals that are "not what they seem" in the scene thread
i know this will **** alot of companies off out there but in order to get an actual product review thread going let's ignore the pressures.
ill start.
---------------------------
Autozone life time warranty drive shafts .
purchase price: $200 per side w/out core trade. core trade value = $40
how the warranty works: give them your name, phone number and adress if you want. when you first purchase the parts.
when you walk in with a broken part they will ask questions:
name?
phone number?
will you point out the part you bought? (from a list on the computer screen)
******then they inspect the part*******
why did the part fail?
are you sure you did not install it wrong?
how did you install it?
are you sure you did not install it wrong? (yes twice)
then they charge you $34.99 each driveshaft to get your new part.
yes it is a lifetime warranty , it is implied that it is a free of charge type deal. but. they charge you a core charge again.
**these are remanufactured parts, alot of people ar complaning about ones that vibrate, shatter withing 5 miles or just don't move at ALL**
be VERY selective when you are in the store looking at their inventory of axleshafts
-------------------------------------------------------------
here is another thing alot of my freids got suckered on :
life-time warranty offers on cheap tools (stanley, husky, cratsman etc)
IF YOU ARE A TECH/ FABRCATOR THE CRAFTSMAN WARRANTY IS VOID, AND IT IS FREAKING ANNOYING TO GO HOME TAKE A SHOWER AND CHANGE JUST TO GET YOUR TOOLS REPLACED.
with the stanley or husky tools (i think husky changed but for awhile this was true) the lifetime warranty stands on SOME of their tools, but they have to be sent into the companies head quaters and both shipping and return shipping have to be paid by the consumer.
this is fine and all that, but usally the shipping is more than the tool it's self.
every tool at my shop is either SNAP-ON/BLUE-POINT, MATCO, or CORNWELL becuase of the fact that they have tool trucks that give you discounts after awhile of dealing with the same person, and warranty exchanges are just so much eaiser. (you pick out the tool that you want if they have a bunch of them).
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
there are quite a few more instances but i cannot recall them right now
hopefully we can make this a sticky so people can see what they are really buying first before they buy becuase of word of mouth. (thats why i bought the axles, someone on here told me it was a free trade in forever)

SALES PERSON: "Hi, how can I help you?"
CUSTOMER: "I bought these axles here ___ ago and I need new ones."
SALES PERSON: "Okay, what's you're phone number?"
CUSTOMER: (Gives number.)
SALES PERSON: "Okay, is that ______?"
CUSTOMER: "That's me."
SALES PERSON: (Checks part numbers in warranty file, brings new axles up or orders new ones if VDP (order only).)
"Okay, here's your new axles and your new receipt."
OR
"Your new axles will be in (2-4 days generally). We'll call you when they come in. If we don't call you by ___, just call us and we'll see if we've gotten it yet." (FedEx and the truck doesn't always come at the same time.)
MORE INFO:
Usually the customer's information is already in the computer. We never call anyone or sell the numbers or addresses (usually we only have first and last name, phone number and zip code - usually NO ADDRESS unless you have a rewards card). They have my number and only call me when they want me to work more hours.
A limited lifetime warranty return is just that. You bring in a part you bought for your car which has broken. As long as you own the vehicle, the part is covered under a limited lifetime warranty. You bring the part in, we look up your warranty based on your phone number. Then we do the exchange on the computer (not the register). We take the new parts out of the box and put the old broken ones back in the box to send them off to the company. We have to keep the boxes because the companies often will not give us core exchange, etc. unless they get those boxes back. We also will not usually pay you if you try to keep these boxes btw, so don't think about doing it to inconvenience the store, because you'll likely end up leaving without any parts.
They don't charge you a core again. If they are charging you a core on a warranty return, you need to call the district manager (that number likely is under the store hours on the front window or you could ask the manager for it). Take names of the employees that are causing you trouble if need be. Make sure you get the manager's name since they're the ones who are really responsible for this incorrect training.
Oh, and when we look up a warranty, the part numbers are right there. We can look at each warranty purchase. We don't need anyone to point out what they bought on the screen. We could always look up the vehicle again and get the part number there in the event we don't know which number it is on the warranty screen.
I'll get the prices for different axles tomorrow.
I'm thinking perhaps the OP's local store has some issues if it's so difficult to return the axles.
As far as remanned axles breaking, I had more trouble with those when I worked at Advance Auto Parts. We had a much bigger customer base there though, so that probably had something to do with it.

I have destroyed many craftsman tools. This is my favorite: I was working on an eclipse gsx (first mistake) and I was having trouble getting a flywheel bolt off being that there is no clearence for any thing but a wrench. So I took my two craftsman wratcheting wrenches and locked them together to make an "extension" (I know worst mis-use of tools possible, but I had nothing else to get off the bolts) I got everything into position and started pulling on the wrenches then the damn wretcheting gear pops out hit the oil pan so loud it sounded like a gun shot. I picked up the pieces, laughed picked up the broken shell of a wrench, and using the same wratcheting wrench ( minus the wractcheting part) and finished the job.
Heres the best part I took the wrentch that I had forcefully destroyed (the circle that had once enclosed gears was out of shape) back up to Sears, the guy there looked at it asked what happened and I looked him in the eye and said It malfunctioned. He said Oh...ok and gave me a new wrentch.
So in short, no one else has any problems and you are getting raped. FTW.

A normal customer will only have warranty purchases listed in the computer.
A shop might have more listed, since it's in the shop's best interest to see what might be purchased by anyone under their account.
I'm not saying you should post the names here. I'm saying you should take names and then call the district manager because the store you're going to obviously isn't following company policy.

Yep. So he should complain to someone who can do something about it. Perhaps he'll even be able to get some cash back. Hope he kept his receipts from now on (it might help prove that he was charged when he shouldn't have been).
Oh, and I went to get axle prices today, but we've been busy since Shucks is "consolidating stores" around here (they've closed something like 600 stores nationwide I hear). So as soon as I started looking it up, someone else came in and I had to wait on them. Then more work after that and I never got around to looking them up.
The website is pretty worthless for finding a lot of parts.

I started out as a tech with only craftsman tools. never had a problem returning them. and if i did i would just go to another store. problem i ran into was the local store did not stock the tools i was always breaking, so i purchased alot of Matco tools to avoid long turn arounds on tool warentees.
I buy new axles now. no more remans. Advanced, autozone, and Swift auto all sell new axles where i live. swift is around $60 an axle and come with a year warentee. $200 a side for axles is crazy. the dealer i worked at sold them for $170 a side and they were honda OEM remans. new are $300 a side.
only problems i see are the lifetime brake pads. those things are junk! they stink, they squeel, they get really hot and warp your rotors, they even grind your rotors. personaly i always buy oem pads, and swift sells good rotors for $15 a wheel. no need for the lifetime pads, get the oem pads for the same price and have less problems.

NOFX you work for AutoZone? I used to work there.
But yeah, I agree. You weren't supposed to be charged for the core again unless you kept the broken axle.

I don't know how they'd even make you pay a core. As in, I'm not sure how they're managing to ring it up since it's all really computers. A core is only charged if a new product is being BOUGHT. So I can only figure they're somehow messing up a normal purchase, but I'm not even sure how they're removing the purchase of the item and only making you pay for a core charge.
Say you want to buy a battery. I can either (a) enter the warranty information on the look up computer or (b) enter the warranty information on the register. If you have brought in your old battery, I can either (a - easiest way) print out a core sheet from the look up computer and enter in that you've already brought in your core, which will mean you're never even charged the core price, or (b) bring your battery to the register and ring you up for a battery and core, then return the core at the look up computer.
There's not really a way for me to charge a core price... but not a new product.
I've had some real ******** come into my store before and several of them are my best customers now. I give them what they want, take plenty of time with them and figure out what they need and when they need it and everyone's happy. A lot of these people go straight to me when they walk in the door. One of them has been trying to get me to work with him instead.
We have plenty of people who come in with dealer shirts on and plenty more with other business names on work shirts.
It's unlikely that it has anything to do with where you work. I can't help but wondering if an employee is pocketing your "core" money though.
You need to talk to the STORE MANAGER at the very least. Screw talking to just any grey shirt.
And as everyone has pretty much agreed, it sounds like it's just the store you're going to.

What's funny is that I paid $60 each for mine without employee discount. D16Z6 as well. It's only $95 with core charge. Part numbers were 7083 and 7078.
Got these the other day. Forgot they were in my bag until just now.

I only removed the address, phone number and store number from these. The prices should be the same or very similar throughout the US I'd imagine.

Oh, and the last one says it has anti-lock brakes, but it doesn't. Sometimes the computers leave out stuff like that.
You should be able to get printed out quotes like these from your local Autozone stores too though. So if there's another one around, try going there and checking maybe.
You might be able to get quotes for your locality online. Try using the part numbers. I tried getting prices by looking them up manually on the site, but no luck.
