Default 98 gsr motor. cable or hydrolic

ok, so Im going to pick up a 98 gsr motor later today and I was wondering what you guys think as to weather I should keep the hydro trans. and get it to work in my car? or should I opt for a cable transmission. I belive I read somewhere that cable transmissions are weaker.. and I looked at a list of transmissions and where they come from.. and the gear ratios of some of them are just hideous... but to let you guys know.. I believe this motor has been built up a bit.. like some internals and a turbo, idk.. i haven't seen it yet. tia!

so your asking whether you should go hydro or cable?

I think you should figure out which tranny you want first, regardless of whether its cable or hydro. What's this car setup for...track, DD, both? Do you want an OEM LSD? Are you going to be driving on the highway alot? Then you wouldn't want to have an S1 cable tranny that revs @ 4500 while going 60. But for racing the short gears out of the S1 are a great advantage.

Our cars are made for cable transmissions. I'm not saying that you can't use a hydraulic transmission, but you'll need to purchase a hydro to cable conversion kit, so budget comes into play.

Personally, I think the stock GSR tranny (Y80/S80 w/ optional LSD) is awesome, atleast for my needs. I do more highway driving than racing. My gears aren't as long as an LS, but not as short as an S1 or ITR tranny. Plus, if you get the LSD, even better.

ill prolly be doing a lil bit of hwy driving.. ~90% of the time on the road im goin roughly 55-65mph. mostly what ill be doin is just dd plus some autocross when it comes around. The more i think about it, the more i believe ill just keep the motor mated with the trans thats comin w/ it.. are the gsr tranny's known for any syncro wear out or other defects? im sorry about all the noob questions, but this is my first time putting real thought into gearing ratios and technical transmission stuff..

It's not THAT bad. At 4500RPM, you are doing around 75-80MPH with a B16A S1. That's still shorter than a GSR or LS transmission, though.

I would say look for a ys1 out of a 92-93 gsr. It's cable and no messing around with any conversion kits.

id usually say go cable. but if you already have the hydro tranny and you are happy with a gsr tranny then just keep it and go hydro.. personally id go cable ys1 or j1 or something,

im not too worried about difficulty of a kit, its the money for that kit... i can't find a used one and new ones are way too expensive..

if you absolutely go cable at least get one with a diff since that is the weak point of the cable trans. i dont know what you plan to do with the car but if u go dragin on it or to the autocross, youll eventually blow the diff up and wipe the case out with it.

good luck mang

I would say to go with the hydro tranny I went through so many cable trannys due to the fact of them just being older and having more use on them..I've spent the money on syncro kits and all....I now use the hydro conversion and wish I went that route a lot earlier

Hydro
