Default Starting Problems?

So I posted this last week,

I have a 1988 DX daily driver that I run around in and in the past little while I have had problems starting the car after it has been running?
The car runs fine and starts fine if it has been sitting for a while but will only crank over if I drive to subway run in for some lunch and come out and try to start it.

It will just crank over but not fire. So If just wait 5-10min and try again and it usually starts right up?

If not give it another 5-10 min and try again and it starts then for sure.

This happens in warm and cold weather does not seem to matter!

Anyone have any ideas of where to start with this?

Some guys said could be main relay do a search! and I did and there is nothing of any use on the main relay.

Past posts say Honda has problems with main relay and one other post is about a guy trying to take out the main relay with out tools! lol

One guy said replace the fuel injection system with an SI version. And that will fix the problem. I am not interested in doing that this car is old and not in the best of shape I just want to fix it and make it a reliable car.

So any have this problem and able to fix it?

thanks

darren

Do you smell gas? My first thought off reading this is flooded engine, maybe a leaky injector. I know this test works with a carb but not sure about EFI: Floor the pedal when it won't start. If it starts it's flooding and your injectors are leaking.

Also, are you sure you aren't over heating?

This sounds like a main relay for sure! I am going through the same problem now but i ordered a new relay. Its like 20 dgrees in NY so i guess it really doesn't matter about temps!

Here's how to make sure its your main relay:

~Get in and close the door so you can hear it......Turn the key to on position but do not start!

~You should hear a click and the check engine light comes on, And another click after the check engine light turns off.

~If you only hear one click and are missing the other click then its your relay.

~Each time you start your car turn the key and listen for the 2 clicks from the relay. If you only hear one click you know it will not start or it will start and die.

~if you hear both click you know it will be fine!

I did this each time i got in the car and i could predict if it was gonna start or not,LOL by the clicks. Mine was missing the last click of the relay

Thanks a will listen to see what I hear. lol

Yah sounds like that might be it only happens after it has been runninng and sometimes when you go to start it it sounds like it starts to run for a second and then dies like right away. Like it sort of coughs while cranking and then that is it for like five to ten minutes you just have to leave it and try again and then it starts and runs fine!

And no smell of gas at all.

Thanks

Yeah yesterday mine started up and died right away, but today it won't start..lol....waiting to get a fresh relay. You can repair it but it will happen again. I am not going to change getting stuck while driving for 50 bucks. The tow truck ride home will cost alot more!

Buy a new one!
