Default b16 or gsr tranny for b20??

So I'd rather spend the same amount of money for a b16 tranny than a gsr tranny for my b20 swap. BUT, everyone on the block is saying a gsr tranny would be better. Does the b16 tranny really rev to high for the b20?

heck for NA id go with type r but if ur on a budget go with the b16 has shorter gears than the gsr but gsr is still good but if you want shorter gears go with b16, but if moneys no option go with type r tranny with lsd and 4.7 final drive

I wish money was no object, but it is lol. It will be a b20 teg DD. What would be the downside with the b16 opposed to the gsr? Just a higher cruise rpms right?

Up-Shift landing points..?

From what I've read, b18/b20 guys with b16/R transmissions fly through gears too quickly, and keep the motors operating past their powerband. The shortest geared transmissions are probably good for regular daily driving, but in an all-out drag situation they might not be the best choice, depending on your individual powerband of course. But then choosing when to shift might fix that...

bah, I lost myself.

i love my B20 w/ B16A2 trans, Gsr's and LS share the same 3rd gear...with a b16 trans you'll be doing 70mph at 4100-4200rpm's, gets annoying

Yea, if you boost, a longer geared tranny would benefit you...if you plan on NA, get the shorter geared ones..

I have a GSR (YS1) from a 92-93 GSR in my '91 Integra and I like it. I have a four door 100% stock, with the exception of the tranny, and I can pull on my cousin's 2 door 100% stock as well. At 78-79mph I am nearing 4,500 RPM. Not too bad, but it does kill gas seeing as I drive for about 20 minutes straight one way to drop my girl off at work

it'll be n/a, daily driven 30 miles back and forth m-f. Not too worried about the 4500rpm cruise. Imma go with the b16, i feel like the gsr tranny would be too low for a b20 without vtec to help out that 3rd gear.

tis not going to matter na or boost. gsr tranny will best your best bet. if you do go boost then ls tranny. if anything but b16's are just way too short for that block to handle. you will stay in the higher rpm's longer and thats not good on those paper this sleeves.

Actually they share the same 2nd gear but the gsr is shorter in 3rd-5th.

you guys dont understand that a b16 or even type r tranny is not good on the stock bottom end of a b20. sure it might seem badass when you slap it on there but it wont be badass when your sleeves crack after 5000 miles. unless you build that bottom end there is no point for a b16 or type r tranny.

gsr for NA
ls for boost

yeah my friend has a NA B20 with a B16 trans and its pretty nice as long as you dont mind the high rpm's on the interstate.

I've had my B16 trans on my b18 for over 15k and its still drives like day one of the tranny swap....

So if you have an LS tranny that takes longer to go through the gears compared to something like a b16 that will go quicker ..

How is it that you would be in the higher Rpms more with the b16??

What speed do you "cruise" at? Even at 80, it would still be under 5k.
I don't know too many areas that have a speed limit of 80 either.

And look at the average gas mileage between the LS/GSR,
are they Really that different? You won't be wearing down on the engine much at all.

Because since i drive 30 miles back and forth a day, the car would be in 5th for the majority of the trip and the engine would be at around 5k, opposed to 3500k in 5th with an ls. I drove my car today in 4th to see what it'd be like and it's not too bad

so did you do this b16 tranny swap yet?

i'm still in the debating process ever which tranny to use for my b20 teg swap coming. it will be the existing LS or a gsr one (with lsd) that i have laying around, that needs a small repair(i hope). Its a daily driver and i'm actually leaning heavily towards the ls tranny. I figured it will be a 450rpm difference at 80mph, thats about halfway between the ls 4rth and 5th, so the b16 fifth is probably like the ls 4rth. that would drive me nuts.

Can't decide about that gsr/ls trans tho, for the pleasant DD. the gsr trans has that factory lsd...
