91 accord ex......trying to get the nut off the end of the cv axle spindle so i can remove the axles and brake rotor etc......so far I've tried a 250 ft lb Impact Wrench, 1 whole can of Liquid Wrench, Breaker Bar which is now broken, another wratchet that I actually stood on with my own weight (130lbs)...still it wouldn't budge!....any ideas on how I can get this stupid little 36mm nut off the spindle???..
my next step is Im wondering on putting a torch to it to heat it up a little but Im not sure what else to do...help please

 

You need an impact wrench.

 

You did unstake that little dimple? I'm assuming you did. If it's rusted try some PB blaster. Short burst of impact wrench.

But yea, short burst of the impact wrench should do you good. Even an electric on I borrowed from autozone (100 ft lbs) could break it. Well took like 100 short burst anyway. =D

 

i tried an impact wrench already many times ....its running at 250ft lbs...100 psi.........as for unstaking the dimple I tried that but only seemed to bend the nut slightly....so how do you know when it's unstaked????.....Ive been at this for like 4 hours....gonna try again tomorrow with some PB blaster....today I used Liquid Wrench and it doesnt seem to be as good as PB also gonna try and rent a 500 ft lb impact!!!...never had this problem before tho!

Well when the nut is unstaked, the nut should be a circle. So the nut can be unbolted. Use like a punch pin type.

 

Crank up the psi, I usually go at least 130 to break mine loose.

 

if all else fails your going to have to cut the axle nut off and 8 times out of 10 you will also need to replace the axle

 

I finally got that ***** loose....luckily my 250 lb neighbor had a nice prybar and long pole so we conquered it lol.....the other side was so eazy compared to this one.....i noticed the back of the nut was totally rusty so that was probably not helping....Im currently replacing the axles, along with brake rotors, ball joints, tie rods (inner/out) struts/springs, wheel bearings, the whole shebang! she'll ride like a dream again~......thanks all

I had trouble getting my driver side loose on my 95 EX years ago. Got it with a 1/2" drive breaker bar and a 4-5' cheater pipe on the end. Came off nicely that way. The passenger side came off even easier.

I use this method all the time as I don't have air tools yet (lived in an apartment with no garage and recently moved into my house which has a garage so air tools will be coming soon). So you don't need air tools to get it off.

 

i had the same problem...... took forever to break loose.....

 

i know man its crazy easiest thing to do and it has to be difficult..wtf .....i finally got it loose but then the axle was rusted inside the hub....lol and i tried everything to get that out.....but it's ok the new steering knuckle assembly, brake rotors, ball joints and wheel bearings and axles for both sides are all on the way to my house....i cant wait!!! it didnt cost much either for all the new parts either!!

 

I have always had to use a torch, due to road conditions here, road salt, mud , etc.

 

I used a slider bar

- position it horizontal with half of slider bar on each side
- pipe on 9 o'clock side, sit on it
- floor jack under 3 o'clock side positioned so you can operate it from your sitting postition
- let gravity and the jack do their thing

 

you just need a bigger gun, my gun is 1000lb gun breaks them loose no problem.

 

well do you want to buy us all 1000lb guns and the compressors to support them then....i wont say no to free tools

 

I am having the same problem. Dumb question.... but can you confirm that to take the axle nut off counter-clockwise as I can't see the threads at the end, and my manual doesn't state that info. Front, left, on 99 Accord.

Just want to make sure I'm cranking on it the right way.

It's normal - lefty loosey, righty tighty.

Make sure you unpinch/bend the nut as it's supposed to be stamped down.

I had to use a impact gun on mine as well - my 3ft breaker bar and my friend's ~250lb weight jumping on it didn't do ****.

 

what's best to "undimple" the axle nut?

 

I ran into this prob. a few weeks ago on my buddies Civic. We tried everything I had and just started to round off the corners of the nut. We drove it a couple blocks away to a local repair shop. They zipped it loose and snugged it up enough to drive it back to my house. Once we got back here, we got it right off.

 

What about heating it up with a torch like some people do with the crankshaft nut?

I would not recomend putting a torch to a crankshaft bolt unless you plan on replacing the crank pully and the crank seal.....think about heat transfer and rubberized parts

 

bigger braker bar and a cheater pipe will do the trick i use that on my blancer bolts and works mint and the axle should be cake compared to that...

Now, for some reason, BBallz24 asked a question and so far, all the people who replied failed to answer his/her question. Plus BBallz24 was suppose to create a new thread instead of replying to the old one...

Now for the answer: I took a punch pin and a hammer and unstaked/undimpled the nut. You don't have to make a perfect circle... You can also use a screwdriver, but preferably something nice and flat so you don't actually cut through nut, like i did before. And please in the future, create a new thread. =D

 

when i went to do my passengers side recently it was so dam tight it sheered off the head of our 1/2 drive clean off. that was with my buddy that weighs 300-350 on it. that's when i said screw it and took it to a shop to get done LOL

FYI for the future some shops will break it loose for you for free if is easily accessible or at least for a small fee when worse comes to worse
