Default engine swap problem

I was in the process of putting my d16y8 engine into my civic hx which previously had a d16y5 with vtec-e. When I started to connect the wires, I noticed only one big fat plug will connect with the 2 plug coming out of the driver side fire wall. The d16y8 has 5 wires(white, white/red, green/black,green, blue) while the d16y5 have almost double the wires, but the d16y5 have the same color wire as the d16y8 plug. Will the hx wire work with the d16y8 wire since it's also vtec? Or should I just cut the hx plug and connect it with the d16y8 wires. Please let me know!!! thanks
