I NEED HELP!
My accord is leaking a little bit of oil. I took it to the mechanic and they said that is normal for hondas. So im not really worried about that because its not a lot of oil or anything. But he then told me I should get a new timing belt, and since my 93 accord has 2 timing belts, i should get them both replaced. He said he can't tell if I needed them replaced or anything, he just told me that I should get new ones(just in case). I have no idea when the timing belts were last replaced...I can't get a hold of the previous owner either. The mechanic said it would be $600 with labor and timing belts, and seals for the leak. $175 for the parts, and $400 for labor!
So i just need to know if it is worth putting this kind of money into it not knowing when the timing belts were last replaced and having 197,000 miles on the car. Thanks a lot

Theres only one timing belt.. Unless its a 6 cyl. But a new timing belt is like 40 bucks at atuozone. But you should also replace your water pump while your replacing your belt.
If you have 100k+ miles id suggest changing it. If it breaks or slips, you can say buh-bye to your valves and your pistions..
Theres a how to on replacing your timing belt in the FAQ's Sticky in this forum. If your not capable of doing so id suggest finding a new mechanic..

you probably should change the timing belts seeing that your car is almost 200K. i'm guessing if the last owner did change the belt, it would have been around 90k-120k, just guessing here. um about the pricing, 600 seems a little high to me. i see other shops around me do it for 400 with some other extra work. did you go to like a corner gas staition shop or somthing? i know for sure those guys love to rip people off most of the time. ask around in your area for other respectable shops that do good work and try asking around for prices first. i personaly would go to a tuner shop where they work on cars all day, i go to one in my area and they give me the best deals.
alright guys, thanks a lot! For some reason the mechanic told me I had two timing belts. And that $600 actually includes timing belt, water pump, camshaft seal, crankshaft seal, oil pump seal, and labor. I actually talked to someone who said he could do it all for $300-500, which is a bit of a relief. I wanna keep my car for as long as possible, so i guess spending the money is the best thing to do, at this time. thanks again guys!
p.s. Thabao, it was actually a little local auto shop on a corner. hahaha

Yes there is only one timing belt but there is a balance shaft belt that will need to be replaced as well.
You should also look at replacing the water pump, tensioner and springs may also need to be replaced as well. That is why it's usually a $700-800 job at the dealership. They replace everything including a complete valve cover gasket kit and a filter and oil change. Your price is a steel if he is going to do all of those things for $600. But that is highly unlikely that he is replacing your WP or tensioners.
Any mechanic that has done a Honda timing belt should know what else needs to be replaced at the same time. But some mechanics may give you that price then come at you after he has your car in the garage ripped apart to tell you that you need to replace your tensioners and water pump. That way they get you in @ 600 and you leave paying 8. Just a heads up.
