transmission - shifting hard, slipping - 98 accord lx
i have a 98 accord lx, 4 cylinder, AT. the trans. is slipping and shifting hard. my mechanic put it on the machine and got these codes:
P0720 & P 0740. P0720 is the countershaft speed sensor and P0740 is a torque converter clutch system problem.
I bought a Haynes repair manual and changed the fluid. Is there also a filter because I couldn't find anything in the manual about it. other posts recommended changing the fluid, driving for a week and then changing it again. dunno if anyone has any advice on that or if it sounds reasonable. I also added a bottle of stuff that's supposed to help slipping/hard shifting.
I only changed the fluid once and it helped a little bit, but it's still slipping and shifting hard. I checked the countershaft speed sensor - the manual said it should be between 400 & 600 ohms. it read 398.6. i realize that it's slightly less than what the repair manual said, but could that cause my problems? my mechanic said that the trans. needs to be rebuilt and wants to charge $1900 but I want to try to fix it myself first. I don't have the $ to fix it - just had a baby and my wife isn't back to work yet.
any advice would be really appreciated.
thanks,
chad

well the bad news is its only gonna get worse..you can find a used auto tranny for a **** load cheaper than that 1900 rebuild..only problem is labor if you could do it yourselrf that s what I'd do...
well I uave never owned an automatic honda..but ive been on HT for years and hae seen thousands of auto ttranny problem post...from what I hear and thsi is not verbatim..there is a design flaw in the auto trannys trthat somehow leavers 2nd gear gnot getting enough lubriaction which leads then into more failure(don;t remember the exact scenairo) leaving people like you in siuations like this...the'kk ne some othe auto ezxperts that Im sure will chime in soon...GL man and congrats on the baby
I'm getting mine rebuilt next week. Have 123K on the car and it needs it. I've been told by 3 different shops that the Honda transmissions have flimsy clutches and they just wear out. Stock rebuild is 1700-1900 in my area, depending on hardware needing replacement, but that should include new clutches, torque converter, bearings, seals, etc. I'm having my shop make it a bit beefier with better than stock clutches, install a shift kit, and get a better torque converter with a slightly higher stall speed. That should give me better launches and be reliable.
