What can cause this?

Blown head gasket, causing oil to mix with the coolant.

those old 80 models are really bad about the heads getting cracks.

We need more info...

Did you check the engine oil dipstick and the transmission fluid dipstick to see which is fluids are low. Someting is leaking into your cooling system, and it's either engine oil or transmission oil.

Have you done the following:
-do an oil change and verify that there's no coolant in you engine oil...
-do a compression test on the cylinders.. (make sure you pull the fuel pump, and remember WOT)

What year is your car...how many miles...
