I have a 1995 Honda Civic EX that was manufactured in Canada and therefore has DRL installed. From numerous searches on Google, I was able to conclude that removing the fuse would disable them. According to the owner's manual, the 10 amp fuse located at position 15 was the DRL and position 17 also had one installed (17 didn't have one but 15 did) When I remove the fuse, my parking brake fails to disengage. I'm able to release it with the fuse re-installed. The manual doesn't state that fuse 15 controls anything else but the DRL which is standard on Canadian Civics. Does anyone know of an alternative method?

i have never heard of this. alot of civics were manufactered in Canada but sold in the US. i didn't even know they came with DRLs. it isn't by any chance city lights is it? city lights can be simply unplugged. if you aren't the original owner someone may have installed JDM headlights with city lights.

 

cut your headlight harness!! lol j/k did you search?? im sure there is someone who had the same question. i thought you could cut a wire somewhere in the headlight harness but im not real sure...

oh...and btw, my friends cx hatch was manufactured in canada and there is no DRL's on his car.

 

By city lights do you mean parking lights? The lights that come on are a low version of my high beams. They don't look any different than my low beams at night. I'm not 100% sure if this car comes standard with DRL or if it was installed at a later date since I purchased it used. There's a 10A fuse installed in 15 but no 7.5A fuse in 17 which are the only locations for the Daytime Running Lights.

I did notice another forum mention cutting a yellow wire and grounding it to disable the DRL. Some people were creative and installed a switch.

 

First, to clear up some confusion.

The car has DRLs because it was originally SOLD in Canada, not because it was MADE in Canada. All 6th gen Civic hatches in the US were MADE in Canada. How many of those do you see with DRL? (The answer is NONE or VERY FEW because they don't come stock with them in the US.)

DRLS = NOT city lights.

DRLs are the same thing you see in newer Chevies and such. When you turn the car on, the lights AUTOMATICALLY come on. It's not when you turn parking lights on or turn signals or anything. DRLs are a safety feature used to make your car more visible for ALL times that it's running.

A DRL is a headlight that runs at approximately half power. These are for increasing your visibility to others on the road.

I can't tell you directions for disabling them, but there were some wrong ideas already circulating in this thread, and I figured I better nip them in the bud before it got any worse.

IIRC on 6th gens, the DRL box is in the the driver's corner kick panel. The 5th gen one might also be here.

I can't wait until I can get some DRLs though. I wonder if my insurance company might be willing to lower my insurance a tiny bit for added safety features?

Im not sure if it would work on a civic but I know on some cars with DRL you can simply put the e-brake on 1click, assuming it isnt so tight that it would be locking up the rear wheels at that point..that makes the car think its parked I assume, so therefore the lights go out..

 

Pull the DRL fuse, voila, no more DRL's. No cutting, no soldiering, no driving around with your ebrake pulled up a notch.

That's what I did. After removing the fuse, I wasn't able to disengage the parking brake. The manual lists two locations for the fuse but I only have one fuse installed.

 

pull fuse #16 and #17.
17 may not be present, but 16 will be.

15 should not be touched. It powers the gauge assembly, clock, hazard switch, backup lamps, interlock system, and a few other things in the car that you need.

OR disconnect the DRL resistors.

 

There's no fuse installed in #16 and #17. The owner's manual specifically states #15 (10A) and #17 (7.5A) are reserved for Daytime Running Lights. I only have one installed in #15 and when I remove that fuse, I cannot disengage my parking brake.

 

reinstall 15, pull the DRL resistors.

 

Where are the DRL resistors located?

 

3-pin plug fastened to the back of the driver's shock tower. just in front/below the clutch MC.

 

Just to update NOFX the rear lights don't light up. and if you have Hid's they run all the time and if you have bi-xenon HID the high beam stays on

DRLs are high beams @ 50%. Notice how much more visible other cars are with them on...i'd leave it.

Updated my previous post.

I'd want everything to make a stock installation on a '98 EJ8. What fuse does it run on? under dash or hood?

 

Serious You want it? OKay um i"ll take a look at how in the wiring is I think it is in the stock main Harness not seperate I'll take a look at it in the daytime and i'll refer to the Honda Factory Manual

My car is a 96 so should be plug and play

I know If a car is imported to canada from the U.S.A It needs DRL added so it might be just plug and play but again i gotta check

 

I'm taking it off because I have Bixenon HID's that are Switched by A relay And Powered directly from the battery So no matter how much current travels through it The high beams will turn on. SO even tho the Hi beams are running Half power it would still switch the High beam hid on.

My HID's are really bright On High even during the day It would blind the other drivers.

So Now I would like to remove them so I don't have to have the HID's running during the day when they don't need to be I usually run my marker lights.
