Sounds like you slammed it into gear really hard. Crx Jimmy is probably right, it is internal since the lights come on.
You don't need reverse, just be careful where you park if you can't afford a new transmission (and it goes into all the other gears fine). Oh, and when you get a new one, shift it with respect.
