Default black smoke when racing?

When i race black smoke comes out. What can that be? The motor is a d16y8 on a 97 civic hatch.

not necissarilly... it is just a soot build up of from the exhaust and when you get the RPM's and compression revved up its makes more backforce and blows it out... as long as it doesnt smell like gas your fine.

If it happens a little bit only at higher RPM's -- you're probably just burning oil -- most older Honda motors have a tendency to do that.
