Default Heat Shield Question...

When I was driving my car tonite, I heard this scraping like 20 yards from my apt at school. So I pulled around back, check under the car, and it seems to be my heatshield from my cat hanging down. Any reason this would also cause my CEL to come on at the same time? It was dark and I couldn't see too well, but the catalytic converter looked to still be intact. Anyone encounter this before?

Maybe whatever caused the heat shield to break broke your O2 wire/sensor.

I was thinking that, but I was curious if the heat shield being off of the cat would trigger the CEL. It's been raining here since last night so I haven't had a chance to look at it yet.

Removing the heat shield will not cause your Check Engine Light to go off. I am not quite sure what you hit. Were you drunk and hit a curb? I would definitely check the o2 sensor and make sure it is still snug. GL

Definately wasn't drunk. I was at a stop sign, went to make a right turn then I heard the scraping... It was like 50 feet from my parking slot... I'm going out to look at it right now....I'll let you know.

Looks like there's 3 bolts on each side of the heat shield...all 3 on the right side aren't there and 1 on the left side looks to be gone, they might still be in the cat, but I won't have a chance to get it up on the jack until later tonite or tomorrow morning...I'm gussing the holes in the heat shield just rusted and gave out.

just take off the heat shield...its just there as a pre-caution...I've had mine off for a while now (like 6 mo.) and there's been no problems ....but if it got to your o2 sensor then that may be a problem ...not bad...but an unwanted expense

No cuts in the wire. I cleared the code and it's running fine now. I think the metal touching the wire was causing it to ground out.
