Cable Clutch in 91 LS- Having problems - could be tranny. I need help!!
I have a 91 LS with a stage 3 racing clutch (cable), short throw shifter, and aluminum flywheel. Since I've put all of this on the car (which has been almost a year ago) it has grinded going into 2nd and 3rd and when you down shift to first. I've adjusted the clutch both ways trying to find a spot where it doesn't grind. Over time i've let it disengage more and more and now its adjusted all the way out. Each time I adjust it, it quits grinding for a while and then I'll notice it grinding and adjust it a little more. I would think its the differential in the tranny but I put a different tranny in and have the same results. That part- although irritating- I could live with. The real problem at hand now is this: Last week I was driving the car and noticed a couple times that the clutch felt like it was slipping. Later that night I was driving down the road doing about 55mph and went to shift from 5th to 4th and it wouldn't come out of gear. I forced it out and then it wouldn't go in any gear. So pulled over popped the hood and fooled with the cable a little. Tightened it up a little - like maybe one turn. Got back in the car- with the car turned off- went in every gear just fine. Started the car with it in first and it made a loud noise from the clutch area that sounded like it was slipping. Turned the car back off. Let the clutch back out the turn that I had made before- Started it up and it was fine. Continued driving. Wend about 10 miles down the road and had my hand on the shifter and you could feel it get tense. When it did it was the same sanario all over again. The clutch is completely let out at this point. but its almost as if the adjustment is stripped or something because no matter how many times i turn it to try to tighten it up- the amount of threads showing aren't changing. I'm definitely going to put a new clutch in. I haven't like this one since day one anyway. But I'm wondering if its something with the tranny. Or the syncros? Also theres a spring in there somewhere that lets that cable move back and forth . . Right? Could that cause the problem? I really need help. This has me stumped. If it was the tranny it should get consistantly worse, but I can actually drive the car - I just have to get out and fool with the darn cable every time it "freezes" up. Any suggestions?
mine got stuck in 5th like that over the weekends but mines hydraulic... but after i forced it out i also heard a loud clunk and then umm yah, no more 3rd, 4th, or 5th... my trans blew up... change your trans fluid, while doing it see if theres metal shavings and such in it... might as well do that while your changing your clutch...
oh and your clutch cable could be shot and just stretching out also and thats why you gotta keep adjusting it...

it sounds to me you had a problem even before you started.
you will spend more on fixing your synchros than getting yourself a new tranny.
or if you have the $$
you could get http://www.level10.com parts.

joey joey joey...is right...start with the cable cuz obviously it needs to be adjusted first
Thanks for all the help. I've never attempted to change a clutch cable though. Any advice on that?

undo it from the tranny and pull it from the top of the clutch pedal under the footwell...it just turns 90 degrees where it connects to the firewall. then pull it straight out...good luck
Hey guys thanks for all the help. I took the clutch cable loose last night and it looks fine. When I started the car with the cable loose I noticed a noise coming from the transmission though. So now I'm thinking throwout berring. I went ahead and got a new clutch kit today. Gonna try that tonight and see how it goes. You guys agree with my thinking on this, or is there something I might be overlooking?
put a new cable in at the same time of the clutch install... the cable might LOOK fine but its probably just worn out, especially if you've never replaced it, it shouldn't be coming out of adjustment like that all the time. just my .02
Well the clutch is definitely F$#Ked up - and yes that's the technical term. LOL. Also the pilot berring is completely gone! There wasn't much left of it at all! Problem now is - the clutch I got, which is for a 91 doesn't fit! So I'm thinking this transmission is actually a 92. I don't know for sure how to check. I have the numbers off the transmission. A1-1005955 Anyone out there know how to check?
