dry spray/uneven texture on finish... some help please
using omni ae single stage, 30gal 6hp devilbiss compressor and husky hvlp. PSI at about 35psi at the gun during spraying. 4:1 paint to fastest reducer, painting about 15deg C...
so i sprayed the car a month or so ago and the finish wasnt even... i had some dry spots that wernt as smooth as the rest of the finish. i figured i would sand it all down flat and give er another coat.
so i put down another coat, this time i warmed up the garage a bit, up to about 15deg c...(did it at about 10ded C last time.. similar results)
i can spray the horizontal panels fine and they look great (except when sweat drips out of your respirator ON YOUR NEW PAINT!! GRRR)
but when it comes to the hood and roof i cant seem to get the strokes to blend in evenly....
here is a picture of the roof... i tried to do cross coats to even out the paint but it didnt work and just gave me diagonal dry spray...

and here on the hood is the same effect but without the cross coat...

so my questions are, how do i avoid the dry spray next time? (could i be angling the gun by accident when trying to hold it horizontal??)
and how do i make the car look best with the paint that is on there now? i have quite a bit of paint to work with so wetsanding and buffing should work, agreed?
any tips on wetsanding/buffing single stage?

you need to ruen up the pressure and adjust the gun fluid control a tiny bit less. when i sprayed my first car it turned out the same way. make sure your fan width is adjusted and you spray with a 50% overlap.
Looks like you have too much air, not enough material, you need to work on your gun control and and adjustments. The PSI going into the gun is ok, but you should be adjusting down the pressure so you have a lot less at the cap. Overlap at least 50% even 60% to ensure your ok. Solid SS black can be laid on pretty heavy on horizontal flat panels, so make sure you apply a liberal build. If you feel comfortable doing it, try holding the gun closer and moving a little faster.
sounds like good advice, partially. Yes HVLP guns suggest 10psi at the air cap, but that is NOT 10psi at the gun. you need a special attachment you screw on your gun that will read the PSI at the air cap. not gonna happen in my garage.
i done some good research and discovered i had way too much media, and too much PSI, and my fan pattern was only about 5" tall. so there was a lot of spray flying off the edge of my fan blade.
ive re-adjusted my gun to about 9" fan pattern, 25 psi during trigger squeeze, and ive lowered the media quite a bit.
saw a good video that suggested doing a stationary squeeze of the gun about 8" away from a test sheet. pull the trigger and let go nice and smooth and firm. should be completly solid in the middle of the fan pattern and slowly fading out from there. (i did this in the first place but my fan patter was WAY to small at 5")
this is what the rest of the finish looks like...

has anyone buffed anything like this out? will a PC 7424 have enough juice?
