roof panel support questions
hopefully someone can help me out here.
some ******* decided to dance on my roof one night and left a ton of dents in there. i finally got the chance to get the dents pulled out by PDR last weekend. the roof looks 100% better but they did something i am not too happy about. they cut the adhesive that holds the roof to the supports. if i knew that was going to happen i probably would not have let them do it. anyway, the support beams are just free floating now and they rattle like all hell. its driving me crazy!!
i went to the local body shop supply and asked the guys there what i needed to do. they about **** bricks when i showed them what was done. they told me the only way to fix it correctly was to reskin the roof. i know that, i just couldn't afford it, or to have no car while it would be in a shop. they said there wasn't a whole lot i could do.
they showed me some panel adhesive that was $50 a tube and said it was what i needed but i would have to get a special gun to use it, that was another $50. they also told me i need to remove all the left over glue in order to make the stuff work.
i am looking to know if this is the right way to go. the damage has already been done so to speak. is there any other product i can use to secure these things? do they need to be pushed up against the roof to support the roof? any help would be much appreciated
cliff-notes for those who don't want to read all that:
pdr cut the adhesive on my roof supports, now they free-float. they make noise, its annoying. what do i do to fix it.

this is 30 pages of a magazine that i can easily fit though the gap

No need for a new roof skin. Get the expandable foam for it from the guys at the local body shop supply and squezz it out onto a slab of cardboard. mix it up in small bits not all at once. Use some gloves or a brush and put it into the areas that need it. Cover your whole interior while doing this. It will expand and not warp the panel. Do this on the areas that were cut by the pdr ********. Make sure to cover the interior because no mater how hard you try it will fall down and stick to anything. This way you save 50 buck but only spend 50. I would not take it back to the pdr guys cause they would not know how to do this and would cause you more damage in the long run by letting it drip all over and such. I mean they did cut it in the first place.
Some one also did dance on your roof. The supports could be pushed down. Simple fix is to get a long enough 2x4 and push them up with a jack stand if you can get it anywere on the floor that is not in the way of a seat. If you jack too much it could mes up your roof wich would later need body work to even out if you jack too far up.
If the headliner goes in easy and is not pushed down by the supports I would just use the foam and leave as is.
Like all my posts from now on I take no responsibility if you damage your car from any of the information I have given. Following my info is up to you.
P.S. I hate PDR and this is why. They don't fix a problem they mask it. Make it look almost as good as new. They have their time and place but this guy that did this job should go back to school.

thanks for the advice. when you say expanding foam, do you me something like the "great stuff" insulation foam?
i was wondering if something like seam sealer would be ok to use for this job.

I would not use the home depot great stuff. That is meant for more like cracks in foundations or along windows and stuff. It might warp the roof panel if you use that stuff. The expandable foam you get from the body supply place is alot softer and will not warp the panel. It actually stays pretty soft when cured. I only used it once after a roof job so I don't remember what it was called. Seam sealer might actually work. I don't see why not. It does not expand nor does it shrink really. Not sure if the roof would move so much as to cause marks from it cause it does tend to dry alot harder than the foam. But I do not see the roof moving as much to cause a problem.
And ofcourse my precaution. I take no responsibility if you damage your car from any of the information I have given. Following my info is up to you.
