Default DataDot DNA for theft recovery?

Was flipping through an older car magazine today and read about DataDot technology. Has anyone used this product before?

"DataDots are a state of the art identification and anti-theft security system applicable to most assets. The product consists of polyester substrate micro-dots, each the size of a grain of sand, onto which unique information is laser etched. These unique dots come pre-mixed in a UV based adhesive for ready application onto assets such as cars, motorcycles, snowmobiles, laptops and other electrical equipment, business assets, cell phones, tools, Powersports equipment, and other high value items.

Each kit manufactured by DataDot contains its own unique code for a given asset. This may include a vehicle identification number, hull identification number, a computer generated PIN for personal and business assets, or the dot information may be fully customized. Each PIN is unique and cannot be manufactured again."

Basically you can spray any parts of the car (intake, clusters, Mugen wing, seats, body panels, etc...) in a discrete location and then register the DataDot kit online.

"Each DataDot kit may be registered on a secure national database for law enforcement access in the event the asset is lost or stolen. To register an asset simply click on the "Product Registration" link and follow the onscreen prompts.

Registration is a vital and important part of the DataDot theft system.

All vehicles marked with DataDot and registered will also be registered in a national law enforcement database to aid police retrieval."

What do you guys think of the application of this to recover parts from theft, and to catch thieves? I know it won't prevent theft, but it may make getting your stolen parts back easier. Not sure how durable the spray is though on parts like the motor, header, exhaust, and wheels.

I can't full graps the concept. I understand what the product does, but I need to see it applied. I then would like to know how easily it can be removed etc. If a different can had to be bought for each individual item it could get confusing.

I believe you buy just a can of the spray, and cover all the parts of your car with it. After registering the spray with your unique serial number, all your products will be input into the system. I think the spray is pretty much invisible to the naked eye.

Ok, so your car gets stolen and you have your parts sprayed. What, are you going to go around town checking every car with a swap for your parts? The concept is good, but I don't know how helpful it would be.

Oh, and I just had a thought. Say I'm driving around town and I see a car with a sweet set of wheels. I decide I'm going to spray them with this DataDot stuff. A week later I call the police and say this guy stole my wheels, they check the datadot registration and I get them back? What would prevent theft this way?

If you buy some used parts from a person and after getting home you discover some of this spray on the items. It would then be easy to figure out if the parts were stolen or not. If they're stolen, seller would be easy to put away.
