Default code 17 after d16z6 swap

I have searched and read several threads on the subject but i didn't find a answer that really put my mind at ease so i'm asking again. My speedometer works fine but every now and then i get code 17 on deceleration. I can't say if vtec is engaging because i honestly don't know (could hear clearly it on my b16). The ? is does this code keep vtec from engaging and if so what causes it when the speedometer is working and the car is running fine?

Yes this stops vtec from opperating! You need to fix code 17. Check your cable going into the tranny. There is a clip that holds it on. Make sure you can't pull out the cable by hand. If its in there tight check you speedo where in plugs into.
