225-50-16's on an ep3???
hey guys, getting back into the game after my ek was stolen dec. 20th, it was basically a full blown race car used as my daily driver, so now im going to go more daily driver friendly with some more comodities this time, im getting an 02 si, anyways, i always do up the suspension before i do any motor work, i was just wondering whats the widest tires you guys have fit on an ep3 with little to no modification, i.e. rolling fenders isn't that big of a deal, i was thinking something along 16x8 with +45 or +40 offset with 225-50's.....anyone tried this???
thanks for moving it, i already asked about it in the ep3 and dc5 section, and also, im not sure if you meant it, but im asking about 225-50's, not 225-60's.....thanks again, im excited to get back into the game

Whoops, I misread. Time for new glasses.
225/50-16 is pretty close to the stock diameter but slightly taller by 0.7", so the car would sit 0.35" higher and you would have 0.35" less clearance from the body. Your speedometer and odometer would read 2.7% slower than reality.
225/45-16 is 0.2" shorter than the stock diameter.

im not too worried about how tall the tire is, more or less how wide it is, and what the ideal offset would be to fit it inside the wheel well, i really want to fit azenis on this bad boy and thats the widest they go on 16 inch wheels..... and 16 is as big as i go

If I were you, I would go with the Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 in 205/50-16. (NOTE - this is their new supersticky tire, NOT to be confused with the Dunlop Direzza DZ101.) By all reports, the Sport Z1 is even stickier than the Azenis. And they're about the same price.
205/50-16 is almost exactly the same diameter as your stock size (within 0.15"), which is what you want. And you won't have to worry about rubbing or rolling fenders. I would not recommend getting the oversized 225/50; whatever slight benefit they give you in cornering, they will take away by degrading your acceleration, due to their taller "effective gearing". Besides, differences between tires are almost always more important than differences in treadwidth, and you'll probably get better performance with the Sport Z1 in 205/50-16 than the oversized Azenis. That's what I would get.

well for now, and from what ive read, the ep3 is actually a little slower in their 0-60 time because you have to shift at 55, my taller tire would fix that, but so would getting k-pro and bumping up the revlimiter a little with supporting mods
thats for later down the road, but i just want the widest rubber i can get in there, im not worried about decreasing my acceleration, im more worried about grip......im really a suspension freak......also, why do you suggest the 205-50-16 rather than the 205-50-15? thanks

If you're worried about grip, concentrate on getting the best, stickiest tires you can get. Don't worry about getting wider tires. The biggest factor in grip is the make and model of tire, not the treadwidth, which makes very little difference (and absolutely none in daily driving).

Because you said you were getting 16" wheels.
However, 205/50-15 is too small in diameter for your car. That's the size for Integras and '97-00 Civics. If you are going to stick with 15" wheels, you need to get 195/60-15, or a size with approximately the same diameter (maybe 205/55-15). 205/50-15 is almost 5 percent smaller, and that's a HUGE difference.

well the reason i ask for 225-50-16's is because thats the widest tire they make for rt-615's and thats a pretty darn good tire
..... anyways, i ran 205-50-15's azenis on my 96 ek before it was stolen, but who cares if its 5 percent smaller.......i know it messes with the speedo but it does give you shorter gears, and all i have ever done before is take out my parents mdx and go to 60 in it with one of my friends driving my car or vice versa, and then see what speed i am actually going....and then i put a small sticker on the speedo, i do the same for 25 mph, 60 mph, and 80 mph......

What matters is the diameter, not just the treadwidth. I doubt they were running 225/60-15.

Yes, it is. And the Dunlop Sport Z1 is even better for about the same price, and you can get it in 205/50-16. So you can get a better tire with better performance AND not have to worry about throwing off the gauges. Best of both worlds.

Yes, but I would still get the 205/50-16, for all the usual reasons - better acceleration, won't throw off the gauges, won't rub, etc.

nsxtasy, i was reading up on the dunlop and was curious about its rain characteristics....i was reading that they are fairly good, while still retaining great dry characteristics, do you have any insight on this???

I assume they mean it's "fairly good" for the category. Tires in this category (supersticky tires on dry pavement, what the Tire Rack calls "Extreme Performance Summer Tires") are designed to maximize grip on dry pavement, and usually don't do well in rain, due to their large tread blocks. If you are really concerned about rain characteristics, then you may want to get a different tire, particularly the Goodyear F1 GS-D3, which has outstanding rain traction and still excellent dry performance.

i know i know i know, its just if it has as much stick as azenis in dry and more in wet, it seems like a no brainer which one to purchase, although just from looking at the photos the dunlops tread is very spaced out, it kinda reminds me of rs2's, i was just wondering caz i found it a shock that tire rack said it had good rainy characteristics, and i wondered if you had any input on that
Did you look at the Tire Rack comparison test which included the Z1, including the test result charts?
Keep in mind that all of these tires are supersticky tires, so you can't compare these results to other kinds of tires that do better in rain.

Lovely. You're bumping your topic because nobody replied that they're using the wrong size tires on their car. Did you ever think that maybe that's because most people use the proper size tires?

In any case, that's your second bump. And stickied at the top of this forum is a topic:
