Default My new KONI yellows - problem!

Hey guys,

I have H&R Type R sport springs in my R, that I've had for a while. I was using them with the stock R shocks just fine.

Recently, I've purchased and had installed Koni Yellows - all way around. Love them!!!! BUT - now my 2 front tires are SCRAPING on the inside of my fender wells every now and then.

I didn't think shocks should lower the car anymore?? I've had a full alignment done, still an issue. The alignment shop said I could fix the issue with "getting my fenders rolled" but I'm a little wary by the sound of that.

Ideas?

are they scraping the plastic fender liners (on the inside) or the outside METAL fender wells? you used "inside" and "fender wells," so it was a little confusing. does it scrape when you go straight or only when you turn? does it scrape only when you go over bumps? if it's just a matter of rolling your fenders, just do it... no biggie.

Good idea... do you know what they should be? And where I would find the number? (if the shop already chucked the boxes... likely has)

The passenger side is scraping on the little nub on the very edge of the well that keeps the plastic held up, (very edge of the fender) and the drivers side is scraping more INSIDE the well.

**EDIT: They scrape when I turn, and when I hit larger bumps.

So the Koni site says:
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Adj. spring perch can lower car approx. F & R = 25mm</TD></TR></TABLE>

Which is likely the problem..........

So rolling the fenders should be alright? The recommended body shop here says they can do each side for 80$

yes, the shocks have 3 height levels for you to adjust the perch

are you on the lowest perch ring?
raise the car on the other 2 higher perch rings

I have yellows on stock springs, stock wheels, 205/50/15 tires, no rubbing or scraping, set on the top perch, so it *should* work just fine for you...

PS - andyt, I'm not running stock springs... I have h & r sport springs, they lower the front by 1.5 inches and the rear by 1.3 inches.

Ahh, well, thats (combined) quite a drop.
My konis lowered the front by about 1.5 inches alone, even at the highest setting.
With lowering springs too, yeah I bet it does rub!

Just take 30 seconds and go out and look.

Evidentally the shop who did them didn't have a clue about what they were doing. Anyone who has installed Konis before knows about the different perch settings on some of their applications.

I'd wonder what else they screwed up...

Now hold on a second... I said I didn't know anything about the perch settings, not that they didn't. Just got off the phone with them, they said they set the perch setting to the top one on the front, and the middle on the rear. Apparently the fronts only had -2- perch settings though, not 3.

It's also my experience with Konis that you should clear coat them, particularly in the weather conditions we experience in BC.

Granted some people just don't take care of their cars, but even those who are mindful always seem to find that their yellow konis turn to a nice brown hue after a season or two. That is assuming you daily drive it... (to me that means year round)

you dont have some silly camber kit in there taking out all that wonderful negative camber do you? i ran my integra at a reasonable low height (no finger gap atall but not tucking either) and even autoXing with 225 50 15 v710's i couldnt get tire to contact fender liners. the key being the mad amount camber
long story short, what alignment specs do you run?

im a friend of pauls from kelowna btw

and amen yo clearcoating your shocks, mine went in new, came out just thrashed which hurt the resale value even tho its just cosmetic

camber wear is a myth if you drive your car in corners

i ran -2.75 degrees frnt and -1.5 rear last season. i replaced tire because i flat spotted on autoXing but the other 3 were more worn on the outer sholder than the inner.
rather then start hacking up your fenders id put in some modest camber, like -1.5 up front or so and see what that does. i know alignments are pretty $$, but being able to use a decent camber curve is what makes the hypeR so great in the first place
