do the tl/cl have trans problems?
I was thinking of picking up a tl or cl, but a friend of mine, who works in a auto repair shop, said to stay away from the v6 hondas and acuras. he says that they have trans problems and replacing them is expensive.
he gave me a a few examples of cars his family owned, including a tl that just had a trans replaced, and a odyssey that is on its 3rd trans and is starting to act up again.
so is this a known issue to the tl/cl community?

The OEM V6 trans from 2000-2003 had 3 major design issues: 1) 3rd clutch abnormal heat damage 2) 2nd gear abnormal heat damage 3) Differential taper bearings premature disentegration.
All these issues have been effectively countermeasured in the current remanufactured transmissions approved by American Honda. These trannys will have "RMH", "RMS" or "RMK" on the serial# label.
In the case of TL & CL, part of the 3rd clutch countermeasure was to also install a countermeasure ECU. The new ECU delivers a noticeable shift lag from 2nd to 3rd gear, and it hits 3rd gear with more firmness. This is to prevent 3rd clutch from slipping, but customers mistake it for another tranny problem.
In response to this issue, there is yet another countermeasure ECU which should be available in the next few weeks. It was designed to retard the engine timing during the 2nd to 3rd gear interchange, thus eliminating the feeling of a tranny malfunction.
More recent countermeasures are being put in place at Honda's certified remanufacturing facilities as we speak. As long as you get a certified Honda replacement trans, you should be ok.

I would suggest smelling your ATF. If there's a slight burn odor when cold, then there's obviously a problem. The '02 CL-S has an extended warranty, so take it in and have it checked out.

I had my transmission replaced in my 2001 Acura CL Type-S in November 2004 and again in March of 2005 (45K miles). I now have 102K miles. Should I be worried about my transmission. Can I have the dealer check it to see if it had those modifications you mentioned above? I read somewhere that if you had it replaced before March of 2005 the transmission would have the same problems as the original. Any input?
