Can I replace just one strut?
I need a strut to pass inspection and I got a hold of a used one. Then I was told I have to replace them in pairs. Would it cause any problems to put the stock one in for inspection, and then put a new pair in later? Thanks

Why?
Because typically if you replace one and it does a better job being new or at least in far better condition than the blown one, you're likely to go ahead and blow the other side.
Once you've got it up on the jackstands, you're really just saving yourself time.
But that's just my opinion.

definately true that it is WAY more efficient to replace them both...however, sometimes situations dictate that that is not an option.
I also agree that I would not replace only one strut if at all possible.

Do they do that stupid suspension shaker test at inspection in NH? I couldn;t believe it the first time they put my car on one of those, it shakes the heck out of the car

I don't think so. But they just put in effect a lot of dumb rules. Taillights have to be stock, suspension can't be adjusted. Just some random stuff..
