Default Questions about wheels, rims for 92 Accord

I am new to the forum here and have been an owner of a 92 Accord for some years now. I am looking to install a new (rebuilt) engine in it within the next couple of weeks, then paint it the original color as the paint is starting to look bad on it.

When it comes to tires, I’m at a loss. The car came with its original wheel covers that screw on to the rims. They are in bad shape and I was looking to replace them by either getting new ones or upgrading to rims.

I want to find some Honda rims as I want the car to be as original as possible (no kits, Euro lights, spoilers, etc on it), but am willing to consider some nice looking rims for it that are not too flashy as to attract thieves to jack it.

I want to know what’s the best way to go about looking for rims for it…Do they have to fit the tires I have? Do I have to buy new tires for them? My car has 14” tires on it and the original black alloy rims. I also do not have my car lowered nor am interested in those thin or thick tires I see on some sporty looking Hondas.

Thanks…

You should maybe check out a set of 94-97 honda accord ex wheels. They look very good and cheap. They seem like they would suit what your looking for.

Just an FYI... 94-95 Ex rims are different from 96-97 EX rims. The 94-95 EX rims are the lighter 7 spoke design that most people prefer, I don't recall what the 96-97 EX rims looked like.

I have those EX wheels on my 96 and don't like them at all. They just don't look good at all to me. I'd try and find a set from the 94-95 EX I think those are the ones I like. I loved how my 18" Limited Alloy 965's look until I hit pothole and it broke both the wheels on that side due to the tire offering little to no protection from being so thin.

Personally, I like the 12 and 6 spoke wheels from the 92-93 Accords. Would require 15 inch tires though. Should have asked this question a month or so ago, I had a set of professionally refinished 12 spokes available.

Seriously you haven't done any searching whatsoever.

Accord FAQ, google, etc

Thank you Fleetw00d, those are gorgeous pics. Yeah I do like these kinds of wheels for my Honda. I need to look into buying 15" tires then.

I went into a tire place yesterday to get an oil change for another car, a Mazda Protege. I asked the guy what he had for a Honda Accord, he said I would need 17" tires. I asked if he had anything for 14" or 15" tires, he said he might have two kinds of wheels but that 17" were what most people got and he had more of a selection for 17" tires. He showed me the tires and I thought they looked too big. I asked him if he was sure they'd fit and he said yeah, they do fit the Honda you have.

Fleetw00d, if I am looking to buy the kind of rims shown in your pics for my Honda, what should I enter for the search words? I have been searching for some time online but don't come up with Honda wheels, just sites for other kinds of rims. I enter wheels for Hondas, my kind of car, and get wheels with up to 5 holes on them. I constantly check on sites such as Ebay but haven't had any luck finding sets like the ones in your pics.

Thanks.

Wow, you're getting bad advice from someone who just wants to sell you what they have in stock. Don't just walk into a place. Do some shopping around, on the internet to start with. Chances are that the place in your neighborhood isn't going to have much selection for your car, and they'll stick you with what they have, instead of what you really need.

Your '92 Accord came from the factory with 185/70-14 tires. You can get whatever wheel size you want, and a tire size to match. Here are some good wheel and tire sizes for your car:

14" - 185/70-14 tires on 14x5.5 or 14x6 rims
15" - 195/60-15 tires on 15x6 or 15x6.5 rims
16" - 205/50-16 tires on 16x6.5 or 16x7 rims
17" - 205/45-17 tires on 17x7 rims

For recommendations on which kind of tires to get as well as which make and model, take a look at the FAQ topic in this forum. You will find a much greater selection of really good summer tires in the 16" and 17" sizes than the 14" and 15" sizes; for all-seasons, the 15"-17" sizes have good choices.

As for where to buy wheels (with or without tires), you can get them in a lot of places. You can buy new wheels from places like the Tire Rack, although they will be expensive. For used wheels, the marketplace forums are a good place to check, particularly the regional forums (also the wheels forum) so you can find ones in your area and not have to pay for shipping.

Search in the Southern California marketplace forum and in the Wheels marketplace forum. Look for topics with Accord, rims, and/or wheels in the title. You might find topics like these:

Honda Accord 94-95 rims and tires
4x114 JDM ACCORD Wheels, CANDY BLUE ANODIZED COLOR!! BALLIN'

You can do the same thing on eBay, where you'll find 325 matches for "Accord rims" and 691 matches for "Accord wheels".

The FAQs here about wheels have been most helpful. I will read them thoroughly. What I don’t want to happen is I buy a set of wheels that might not fit my car, especially if its from someplace online where I can’t even see what condition they’re in. That last line you wrote:

“4x114 JDM ACCORD Wheels, CANDY BLUE ANODIZED COLOR!! BALLIN'”

Well I’m just lost on it. The only thing I know for sure is that they are 4 wheels for an Accord, and that’s all. A few times in the past I’ve seen some guys buy the wrong sized wheels and then had to have them made to fit. The description doesn’t even include the year of Honda they’d fit so I wouldn’t know to look at descriptions like this that don’t include the year of car I have.

Also I’ve been reading all about damaged wheels, broken ones, etc all due to having small width-ed tires on the cars that can’t absorb the shock of hitting potholes. I also would like to keep the kind of tires I have on my car and avoid this kind of damage. I live in an area where sometimes I have to drive off road and over very pothole-y dirt roads.

That's why you may be better off finding someone in your area, so that you can look at the wheels in person (and maybe even try putting them on your car) before buying.

You can try the Southern California forum in the marketplace forums. eBay also lets you filter by geographical location.

Regardless, though, this is one of the risks inherent in buying wheels and tires used. When you buy new, either from an in-person dealer or over the internet, dealers know what fits your car and what doesn't. (You can even send them back if they don't fit.) And there are no concerns with condition. Of course, buying new is more expensive. There are always trade-offs.

Sometimes you have to ask questions about fitment, etc. I was using that example to show you how to search.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by yoni_69 &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Also I’ve been reading all about damaged wheels, broken ones, etc all due to having small width-ed tires on the cars that can’t absorb the shock of hitting potholes. What affects the susceptibility to damage from potholes isn't the width of the tires; it's the height of the sidewall. The best tire sizes for any car, in general (and including the sizes noted above), are ones that keep the outer diameter of the tires the same. So if you want to avoid damage from potholes, your best bet is to avoid getting the biggest diameter wheels, like 17" or even 16". 15" wheels with 195/60-15 tires are probably your best bet for that purpose.

The Tire Rack sells new wheels, and they have twelve different wheels in 15" sizes for your car, at prices of $72-129 per wheel (except for one wheel which is $224). If you buy tires at the same time as wheels, they mount and balance them on the wheels for free.

For specific tire recommendations... If you're looking for the best performing tire in that size, since it doesn't snow in your area, you can get summer tires; the best summer tire in 195/60-15 is the Yokohama ES100, $82/tire at the Tire Rack. If you want to spend less money for a bit less performance, the Kumho ASX all-season tire is $46/tire at the Tire Rack, which is an awesome price for one of the best all-seasons on the market.

Thank you so much for the tire info nsxtasy. The place I went to, to have my oil change was Discount Tires. The guy was really nice and did say if I didn’t like the wheels he showed me, he could order what I wanted.

I have never seen a Tires Rack place. They may have some around, but the most common ones out here are America’s Tires and Discount Tires, both of which I’ve purchased tires from in the past. I never really put any thought into the kind of tires my car needed. They just knew what kind of tires my car needed by the size of the wheels it has, the 14”s.

Yeah I was considering getting summer tires since it gets so hot out here during the summer. Most likely the Yokohama tires are what I have bought in the past as well. The name sounds familiar.

Originally, before I got the my Honda, the previous owner did tell me he damaged it cause he had those kinds of tires on it and didn’t see the dip in the road. He was going pretty fast. He had the bottom repaired but I can tell there is some damage to the body, very subtle but I can tell. I fixed the hood since it was sort of to the left. Later on he put on the factory-sized wheels back on it when he sold it to me. He did inform me about the damage obviously and what he repaired on it.

I will ask around to some of my guy friends and see who knows about tires and wants to take the time to go with me to see them.

America's Tire and Discount Tire are the same company. They also have a mail-order division, Discount Tire Direct, and often you can find tire prices a lot lower on the DTD website than in the stores. The Tire Rack is strictly a mail-order company (although you can also buy tires in person at one of their four warehouses around the country). You can buy tires anywhere you want, and have them shipped to you; any local tire store, car dealer, or independent mechanic can mount and balance them for you. So can the tire department at most Wal-Marts. The Tire Rack website has a network of thousands of local installers across the country who will be happy to mount and balance your tires, too; you can even buy the tires and have them shipped to the installer where you will get them installed. Ask ahead of time about the cost for mounting and balancing; it's typically $10-20 per tire, but some places charge a lot more.

Feel free to compare prices at different mail-order dealers. Discount Tire Direct often looks like their prices are higher than at the Tire Rack, but DTD offers free shipping, whereas ground shipping at the Tire Rack is typically $9-12 per tire. Also many local Discount Tire stores are happy to match internet prices; when buying locally, you don't have to pay shipping, but you usually have to then pay sales tax. Some stores include mounting/balancing in their prices. So when comparing dealers, you need to compare the total cost, including shipping, sales tax, and mounting/balancing.
