tires for 08
Last year i was on kumo estca spts. I think i want to try something a little softer. I was looking at the Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R 205/45/16 for a mostly stock gsr. I auto-x alot and track 2-3 times a year. Anyone have any experience with these tires?? Or know how they compaire to the spts? Most of the suspension on my car has been replace, and it has been corner ballanced, and performance alligned. Any other tyre suggestions would be appreciated, i don't think i'm ready for R compounds yet, just looking for some street legal high performance tyres to last from may till october. thanks for the input
That's a great choice for your needs. So is the Falken Azenis RT-615 in 215/45-16, which is much less expensive ($91 vs $149), although the RE-01R is slightly stickier. Both of these tires offer much, much, MUCH better performance for autocross and track use than the SPT. By saying this, though, I'm not criticizing the SPT; it's a great tire for what it is, it's just a different kind of tire. The SPT is a great daily driving tire - it grips reasonably well on dry pavement, it's awesome in the rain, and it lasts quite a long time, typically 25-45K miles. By comparison, the RT-615 and RE-01R are designed more as dual-purpose street-track tires; they offer superb grip on dry pavement (far better than the SPT), but downsides include relatively short treadlife (10-12K miles is typical) and they're only so-so in rain. Those are the trade-offs. Some people get the "best of both worlds" by getting an extra set of wheels, and using the SPT on the street, and the RT-615 on the track and for autocross.
If it were my money, I'd get the RT-615...

potenza re-11 is being launched in japan on 1st march, no idea about u.s availability, not sure if it replaces re-01r or just supercedes it,

Thanks for the info....I have heard good things about the azenis too. Could i fir a 215 on a 7 inch rim? Yeah i thought the spt was a great middle of the road tire. It would survive on the track but at least i could feel them going away as i aproached the limits. Like i said tho i would like to get something with more grip, i think both me and the car are ready for a little more. I had no wear problems with the spt, but from what you say i might not make it through the summer months on the softer tires. I'll look into the azenis. Anyone out there been on the azenis and the Potenza??? what did you think???

Bridgestones RE-01R's are grippier than the RT-615's, no doubt. 195/50/15's RE-01R on 15x7.5 were turning a couple tenths of a second quicker on a 30 second course over the 205/40/16 RT-615's on 16x7.5.
Not to mention that the RE-01R's last longer than the Falken's.

I have the same issue right now. Between 225/45/15 R-s2's and 195/50/15 RE01R's, the kooks are wider and taller which would benefit me, but there is the re01r praise. There is also about a ~20 price different between the 2 tires.
Also if looking at the re01r's check out the Direzza z1's as they are much cheaper.

i just went with the rs2's, i basically chose them over the rt-615's hoping ill get more life out of them, i love them so far, but my only experience with tires are with kumho mx's and es100's, so i wouldnt take my word for it

I think your terminology is slightly mixed up. What you really want to be saying is, "Make sure it's the Direzza Sport Z1, as the Direzza DZ101 isn't nearly as good."
There are lots and lots of tires coming out in this segment of the market. In addition to the long-time favorite Azenis RT-615 (and also-rans like the BFG KD, Yoko AD07, Kumho MX, and Hankook Z212), recent entries include the RE-01R (better than the Azenis) and the Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 (reportedly better than the RE-01R). Recently Kumho and Toyo showed their upcoming Ecsta XS and Proxes R1R at a show, and Bridgestone is selling the RE011 (or is it RE11?) overseas. More choices in tires is always a good thing.

I think it is RE11, but who knows. Right now im weighing out the pro's and cons of tire width vs compound. I didnt know the Z1's where so cheap, but I think ultimately the width of the kook is going to help me.

Compound beats treadwidth, ten times out of ten. Of course, if you can get the best of both, even better.

I noticed you were from Lehigh valley, PA. Every heard of the PA Hill Climb Association??? http://pahillclimb.org/ I just found out about it and was going to try to make an event this summer. If you know anything about it could you fill me in if it would be worth the trip?
Is the ecsta XS going to be compeating with the rt-615's and the re01??? And will that be available this summer? Yes more tire choices are a good thing

The Toyo R1R should be coming out soon.
Tire Rack has a great deal on the Direzza Z1's, which is what im probably going to go with. Its $84 for a 195/55/15 compared to $106 for a 195/50/15 RE-01R. The place I was going to order rs2/azenis dont have the sizes I want in stock.

but seriously destroyer, it breaks my heart you keep comparing these direzzas and RS2s and other non-comparable tires to the RT-615s and RE-01R... the falkens and stones are in a class of their own.

A guy I autocross with went from RE-01R's to Z1's and likes the Z1's more. The only reason why Rs2's are in the equation are because of tire sizes offered.
Im using Azenis right now and havent driven on the others. Id rather have first hand experience of using a tire than just agreeing what other have said.
Im not comparing the tires, im asking for other peoples experiences and so far they have gone back and forth.

I stand corrected, I was totally unaware of the Z1's specs. It's really an impressive tire from the looks of it and actually could be faster than the RE-01R. Tire rack tested them and liked the RE01R more but it wasn't by much... http://www.tirerack.com/tires/...d=100

i'm personally waiting to see how the R1R fares against the RE01R, the R1R will be available in 225/45/15.
