Do i have a short shifter?
im sure this is an extremely stupid question, but can someone look at my interior picture and let me know if i have a short shifter? the guy i bought the car from said it has a "JDM short shifter," but ive seen posts of other interiors of Del Sol's with MUCH shorter shifters. i think it must be a stock one, but since he said it's a short shifter, i dont know whether it is or not. here's a pic

here's a couple of pics of del sol's that look to have much shorter shifters, leading me to believe that i must have a stock shifter...

is that what the people with "short shifters" have done to theirs? does it look as if i already have a short shifter? and how would i put a **** back on if i cut off the top part where the threads are located?

x2. most people cut out the center of the shifter to make it shorter and weld it back together.... IMO its just best to get a skunk 2 dual or single bend and call it a day.

Definitely get a good quality short shifter. I had an APC short shifter in my ef
and snapped it in half one day driving. (back when i was young) Get something good, either B&M or Skunk2. the money you would save would be spent anyway after you snap a cheapy one.

ok well i just talked with someone else (in a pm) and he said that yes i do have some kind of short shifter. so is he incorrect? are yall saying its a stock integra shifter? if so, id assume an integra shifter would be shorter than a stock del sol shifter but not as short as a del sol SHORT shifter. correct me if im wrong but thats what im gathering from this.

yea pretty much, a short shifter makes your shifts a hell of a lot shorter then stock. Some guys put integra dual bend shifters in which is basically an OEM short shifter. If i were you i would definitely drop some money on an actual short shifter.

ok well at least i know what i have now. i just bought the car and theres so much i dont know about this car...or del sol's in general for that matter. in my s2000 i had an axialflow short shifter. when i rested my hand beside it, my hand (in width) was taller than the shifter and **** combined. it was literally about 3 inches from the console to the top of the shifter. this del sol shifter, on the other hand, is like shifting an 18 wheeler. im definitely going to look into a short shifter now.
A common misconception is that a short shifter is just a chopped off version of the stock shifter. In fact, chopping your shifter has no effect on the angle that your shifter shaft travels through between gears and does not reduce the shifter's angular throw.
A true short shifter decreases throw by reducing the angle that the shifter shaft travels through during its stroke between gears. By reducing the angle that the shaft travels through between gears, the distance that your hand needs to move between gears is also reduced. In many cases, the shifter shaft is also redesigned to be shorter than stock but not always.
The geometry of a short shifter differs from the stock shifter in order to reduce the distance that the upper section where your shift **** threads on needs to move to achieve the same degree of movement in the lower section where the shift rod or shifter cables attach. This ensures that although your hand is moving a shorter distance, the transmission is still fully engaged in every gear. The main pivot point of the shifter lever is repositioned on the shaft in such a way that the lower section which connects to the shift rod or shifter cables is longer than stock, resulting in the desired effect.
So You may have a short shifter it just may not be designed to sit low.
