Default 93 Accord Double DIN Radio crapped out - what to install in its place?

What happens when your father in law's car breaks?.. You try to be the hero.

Well, thats me. A few things happened in a row, wiring issues, radiator fan issue, then his factory Radio just takes a dump.

I pulled the radio out and bought a cheapo Single DIN after market radio and have been toying with different single DIN pocket installs to see what fits best and so far I dont like any of them. The only thing I have not bought was the 98' Accord DIN pocket - 77280-s84-a11za.

What I am getting at is I would like to install a new(er) OEM dual din CD player in its place, so do all facotry Dual DIN CD players work plug and play? And do they mount the same as the 93 Accord Radio - a single bolt on the bottom of the radio to the metal bracket in back? If not, how have you all mounted them?

or

Have you installed a Single DIN radio/cd player in its place? Factory radio/cd player? If so, what pocket setup did you use? Keep in mind this is a stock daily drive for an older guy, so no guages, or EQ's, or whatever.

Thanks in advance.

Thats what I used but then again mine is a 96. Is it the quality of the OEM pocket? No
Is it good enough that I don't notice? Yes and I'm pretty picky about stuff like that.

The only complaint I have is where it mounts to the back to bolt down doesn't seem to be the sturdiest. The pocket and all looks nice and fits pretty decently. It might not be as perfect as the OEM setup but it's not bad at all and I'd rather have a aftermarket radio than the crappy factory setup.

Thats a cool setup. I wouldnt mind it. My only concern is he parks his car outside at night and there have been some stereo thefts over the past few months in his area... So OEM may be better.

Did you try that pocket setup with an oem radio also or just the aftermarket unit?

Just an aftermarket one. The OEM one doesn't have the trim around it for the models like mine. It just has a pocket that bolts underneath of the OEM radio. I don't know what I did with my pocket as I unbolted it from the OEM radio when I took it out. It's been several years since I installed it so I don't exactly remember how it bolted up just know the basics.

I know the sq improved greatly after just changing the H/U. The factory one was just junk SQ wise. The aftermarket speakers helped some but the H/U made the biggest difference. Well, the sub did too but I doubt you are looking for bass since it's your father in laws car.

Not to mention the aftermarket units can be had fairly cheap nowadays. You can find a really decent Alpine for under $200 at Crutchfield.

I'm willing to bet that he has an Accord SE with the Bose stereo. That's what I have. Well, had. When I bought the car the trim piece around the radio was broken, and they had stuck in a cheap Sony tape deck in its place and some aftermarket pocket below it. My guess is that someone stole the OEM stereo. Anyway, it looked like junk and the stereo was in no way attached to anything else in the dash. I wound up going to a junkyard and pulling a trim piece and stereo pocket from a '92 LX and put it in. I put it all together and it looks great now. The OEM pocket actually has some connectors on it so it mounts securely to the dash.

Update: Went to the Honda dealer to pick up the OEM pocket, which by the way was $22. I started talking to the parts manager and he said hes got 8 or 9 different OEM radios that have been sitting for 2+ years, so he give me a smokin deal on one if I was interested.

I left there with a brand new s2000 cd player AND the OEM pocket for $100 + tax. Going to put it in tomorrow.

My father in law will be happy since its an OEM cd player and he doesnt have to mess with all of the aftermarket features. By the way, yes its a SE with the Bose system. Ill take a pic when I put it in and post it up. Thanks for the help.
