D16 Head gasket question?
Everytime I have done a D series headgasket I always see these terrible non-stamp steel head gasket. The material in those I find break down and leave terrible residue on the head surface. The B series one is a nice stamped steel head gasket with layers and I find they are great headgasket because they don't ruin the head surface when you remove the head.
My question is, who makes them? Honda gave me a crush metal one, same with all the local parts store.
PS: If this question isn't tech enough then my bad.

I think this is a good question. I am in the middle of my first honda engine rebuild (D16A6/'90 EX) and the head gasket is murder to get off of the block. I am not too worried about the head as that is the machine shops problem (

Pff, machine shops. I'm gonna machine my own head!

I'll post pics when I get it done. Gonna practice on a spare SOHC head.
I'm gonna look into a few companies. But if others can post that would be great.
Edit: Looks like Cometic Gaskets makes a layered D16 head gasket:

But at 90$ I'm wondering if there is an alternative.
What other headgaskets are the same?

Which part number did you receive from Honda?
There was a TSB released back in 1997 (TSB 97-047) that updated the head gasket for the '88-95 non-VTEC D-series from the old 12251-PM5-S02 part number to a new number, 12251-P01-004. The TSB gasket is layered and lists for $81.60, and you're supposed to use all new special head bolts with the TSB gasket as well (90005-PM3-004, x10, $9.55 each). They require a special torque down procedure as well.

I wish I had access to a machine shop! I do know people at the machine shop we use, so I do get a pretty good deal ($20 for basic resurface), so it is very worth it for me to have done at least.

why dont u just get a copper one?doesnt leave **** all over your block when u take it off and u can reuse too so u dont have to buy a new gasket.
fyi im not sure on how many times it can be reused before it has to be replaced.

Here is a video of a honda SOHC head that is a before/after machining process, so skip forward if you would like the finish product and the difference. That was with those composite head gaskets.

Good idea. But now that I know I can get a honda head gasket I'll stick with that. I would also like to ask another question head related.
I am swapping DOHC ZC pistons in the block, new rings and I'm doing a hone/block resurface at the same machine shop (providing tooling is available). I am also getting head studs. I read today that the d16z6 ones are the same length studs as a d16a6. I would like confirmation on that info.
I'll take lots of pictures. I am hoping to get a 'practice head' (blown up LS) to attempt the my first head resurfacing job. On thursday I go into the shop to work on my SAE mini-baja cart so I'll take a good look at the tooling.
I'm excited.

Well I have all 3 engines laying around more or less. I might just pull one of each. If I'm spending 80-130$ for studs I'm gonna buy the right ones the first time.

Felpro is not. When I went to the local auto store they gave me a composite felpro gasket. The price is right (45$) but I refuse to use those gaskets ever again.
