speedometer and odometer dont work
i have a 99 civic ex.. today was the first day that it has ever acted like this.. earlier this mornin i changed the fuel filter which i dont think would have anyhting to do with this. but now my speedometer and odometer do not work and some times my speedometer jumps.. and my dash lights and head lights flash its like there bright then they dim..
is your check engine light on?
speedometer/odometer problems usually need a VSS replacement.
for the dash lights and headlights....
try to make sure your battery is connected tightly. otherwise it might be your alternator

i hope its somthein like a ground or sumthin except the alternator... but ima check to see what codes its throwing tomarrow
ya most likly the somthings happend with the vss ether the device itself or the fuse... or it could just be the cluster... just check if the vss is broken and work your way back to the cluster...
i am having the same problem as of last night in my 2000 civic 4dr lx automatic. many people are either saying this might be the vss or the alternator... my questions is.... is there anyone who may have had this same issue then fixed it for sure. my problem is identical to this guy's issue.... speedometer off. odometer off. lights dimming. - help would be so appreciated!
we are having the same issue with a 1998 civic. we replaced the alternator but it didn't fix it. We also looked at the wiring harness near the exhaust manifold and taped up some bared wires. This didn't fix it either. I will keep checking this string, and will post if we find the trouble.

After replacing the alternator and fixing the exposed wires on the wiring harness, we finally checked and replaced fuse 15. Now all is working as it should, although we still have the check engine light on. It previously coded to be o2 sensors. Before we to take it to the garage to check the codes again, does anyone know if the check engine light needs to be reset. Our thought is that it was triggered by the bad ground/wiring issue when the fuse blew and that there really isn't anything wrong.
i know in eg'S There is a 7.5 amp fuse you pull under the hood to reset the ECU.
sounds like the wiring harness chaff'd through and it shorting out on the steering column brackets.
