egg smell
Ok, I've had this egg smell that happened twice in the past two days. It was only prominent when I accelerated quickly for both the times.
I checked around on here and the HC forum.. and I read that it could be a bad cat (possibly because of a faulty o2 sensor) or the battery, a vacum leak and someone also said that his clutch made that smell befor it went bad.....
If it is a faulty o2 sensor wouldn't it throw a code? My car hasn't had a CEL in a long time.
I also changed my fuel filter a couple months back and since when it's idleing I smell a little gasoline, but goes away tottaly when I drive.... Would this have anything to do with my engine running lean and producing the egg smell?
I plan on tightening up the feedline tomorrow and if it's still leaking i'm going to have to redo it over again, clean off the feedline and everything else aswell as replace the washers. I used a good DIY and my haynes manual so I dunno why it's leaking gas. My mechanic said that fuel filters are never the same after being changed and should go the life of the car.... but anyway my real concern is the eggsmell right now.
Thanks.

The rotten egg smell is from the sulfur content of the fuel you are using. It builds up in the cat and makes a stink when it burns off. Unless it's really, really bad buildup it doesn't affect the performance of the cat. A lot of times switching to a different brand of gas will take care of it.
Also, if your running too rich and have an ignition system that is not properly burning all the gas, it can cause that smell.
The only time i encountered the smell was when a MAP sensor failed, causing the ECU to just dump gross amounts of gas into the cylinders.
