I have heard some people say that they have to see a referee about smog. Why would this happen to you. Is this just the two year smog check. Or do you get busted and they make to go to a certain smog check station?

 

this is only in california (i think). when u dont pass smog at a regular smog check place DMV automaticly refers u to a referee. now before u go to the referee u have to fix ur car so its smog free but the computer that a regular smog check place wont let ya check smog again so u HAVE to go to the referee. a referee is a government owned smog place and if ur car dont pass smog there...well lets just say u'll be walking home from there

 

they do that and...check ur new motor after a swap..it can be a heaven sent experiece or the beginning of a really crappy relationship...ive been both ways

Its not like they are going to take your car on the spot, you get to go back and fix the stuff wrong.

Another reasons for being sent the Ref is for getting caught with an intake or part on your car that doesn't have a CARB # on it.

that is not true. If you do not pass when you go to state referee you have a certain number of days after that to make your car legal. They do not impound your car immediately.

 

If you fail in some category at the referree, you have a certain amount of time to correct the problem, they do not impound your car on the spot, unless the motor is stolen, or you have no cat, or something extreme like that. I went to the referree to get my motor inspected, smogged, and verified when I did my motor swap. They gave me a sticker that states my swap is legitimate, and legal for use on California roads.

 

my friend got a letter in the mail that said he had to go to a certain smog station to get checked. he didnt pass and he had to get 500 dollars worth of work to pass. he had a smog check within the two years but they still said he had to be checked by a specific smnog station
