Default Just some Kevlar stuff

finally finished my mold for the B-series spark plug cover.

I had some free time last weekend so I made myself carbon reinforced carbon/kevlar spark plug cover.

Sorry it's not welding, but I guess you could consider it fabrication.

anyway the pictures

ohh yeah I mean to put all that info in my post

It is vacuum infused with a clear gel coat. The gel coat is sprayed in the mold with a gel coat sprayer.

I would do a slutty fiberglass layup on the OE cover and use that as your mold. Probably the cheapest way to do it with a good exterior finish.

Not too shabby. That's the exact same weave I use on all my stuff.

OP, it looks a little misshapen or warped. is that just an optical illusion?

umm it's not warped. I noticed the same thing too it must be an optical illusion from the camera. because in real life it is straight.

Looks like he got some weave distortion near the bolt holes. The distortion pulled the weave slightly, that's why it looks like it does.

Oh ok I see what you guys are talking about. yes the weave is distorted near the bolt holes. that is because I didn't cake on the gel coat when I was spraying it in. If I had made the gel coat layer much thicker the effect of that would go down. but I actually kinda like how it looks like that. plus the part is lighter and less brittle with less gel coat.

can you elaborate a little more on the gel coat sprayer? i am just getting started with composites and doing a good job on the gel coat has been my biggest hurdle.

X2, the distortion I see on the face of the part has nothing to do with the gel coat thickness. Those bolt holes are also tricky buggers. On a part like this you are going to get weave distortion no matter what but the trick is to move it off the face of the part if you can. The shape itself is not warped though from what I can see.

They are pretty close to the same as far as layup goes but post cutting cured parts is a PITA with Kevlar. When you cut Kevlar will get little fibers hanging off the cut edge. There are a few tricks to getting a decent cut edge but it's still really challenging. The reason for the fibers left on the cut edge is that resin has a hard time fully wetting out the tiny filaments in the fiber bundles themselves. The resin surounds the bundles but when you cut through a bundle then there remains exposed filaments that are not wetted out fully.

Not trying to thread jack but noticed a few questions I had answers for

I've found that using the right gel caot is a big part of it. Other than that a regular HVLP with 2-2.2mm tip works fine. Getting the gel coat the right viscosity is the part that through me off at first. With most gel coats you need to thin it a bit before spraying. Some people use styrene, I happen to use Duratec high gloss additive to thin mine. but use a very low percentage.

yes using the right gel coat is a big part of it looking good. I personally use marine clear gel coat from Composites One. the only thing about that is I buy it in 5 gallon pales because you can't get just single gallons from them.

I personally use a dedicated gel coat spray gun. The only benefit to using a gel coat sprayer is that no thinning is neccesary to get it to work. and it cleans up a little easier with no risk ruining a nice HVLP sprayer.

The gel coat sprayer does just what you think. you basically spray what is going to be the final/top surface into the mold so you reduce the chance of bubbles on the final part

and yeah there is a distortion on the face of the part. didn't even notice it until it was enlarged in the pictures.
