I use stainless rod on MS all the time for various reasons without ever having a problem.

Why would you do that? I mean seriously. You preach so much about doing things right and then you use the wrong filler so it looks prettier and it's easier to weld with? So you charge the customer more so you can use 309 rod on MS and backpurge it? er70s was designed for you know......general use on mild steel plus it's cheaper and doesnt require purging. So again why do you use 309? You really baffle me dude. <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by bigTom &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">I use stainless rod on MS all the time for various reasons without ever having a problem. </TD></TR></TABLE>

I hope it's not structural at all. Only baby jesus and welding engineers know what alloy concoction the weld area actually is.

But yeah for things that don't really matter or in a major pinch i do it too

If you are going to use a stainless filler on mild steel the only thing you can use is 309. There is nothing wrong with using 309 other then the fact it cost more and it may sugar.
