So I got a ticket for my Apex'i N1 today....
The cop had me pop my hood and the works, but luckily all my gear is legit--DC header,+AEM intake. He said my "MSD" ignition was illegal but he would let it slide. The funny thing is that I just put a brand new OEM distributor on my car with NGK (blue) wires, so I think he got a little confused
. That being said, I now have to get my **** reff'd.
Here's my setup: d16a6, AEM SRI, DC Sports header, 2 1/4 piping, to my Apexi N1 can. My exhaust isn't loud at all compared to 90% of ricer cans out there.
Has anyone had there noise level tested with a similar setup? Although, I will be finding out soon if I am under 95db's, I recall from open track events at Laguna Seca that 95db's is race car status!!

it looks like you are probably running a straight pipe back form the headers go get a large resonator put on and put the cat back on too if you dont already have them on and you should be fine. but on the other hand me personally i would ditch that can and just get a catback.

yeah quiet and deadly. Custom made resonator or stock one?

Definitely not doing this. The ref test is free and if I fail, I can just go back with a stock can and pass it.
As far as the resonator, I'm not sure. I haven't really inspected it that well.

Aesthetically, I wasnt too fond of it when I first got the car, but it does sound great and it totally grew on me. I am smogging the car tomorrow because I traded it, so it's up to the new owner (a good friend) if he wants to change out the exhaust.
I don't any N1 style exhaust that is remotely quiet. I think some of you guys are confused as to what is quiet and loud. Fart cans are loud and easy to spot for cops.

I understand, i grew up having all the fart cans imaginable , but I have never found an exhaust i like more than a good custom oem looking 2.25 inch. No cops care if it looks stock. Its just like having a loud v8, no one stops them.

just swap the oem cat back... go back to stock and save for an RS*R or hyper medalion... something with a muffler and NOT a canister. cops will fu*k with you no matter what, if they see that... even if its quieter than oem.
Well, hopefully it passes as is and I'll get the sticker that says the exhaust is under 95db's. I will be trading the car this week so I will essentially be borrowing it to get the decibel test done.
I have to agree that the sleeper look is best. I will be putting a MAGNAFLOW
turbo muffler on the EM1 and I plan on painting the exhaust system black. I used to run this setup on my old e30. It sounded/looked great and no attention from cops:

Lol. ^^^ Yeah, they love to give us a hard time. We have the same model per se, but I have the one with a smaller diameter tip. I am pretty positive that I will pass this effin' test. I read that they test it at 3500 rpm or so. In that range my exhaust is very quiet. Like you can barely hear it quiet. ]
BTW your car looks nice. Except I don't like the tach and the red drum.

Mine is the 90mm one. 3.54 inches.
From the Apex website:
"All A'PEX exhaust systems comply with applicable emission laws since they neither modify nor relocate the required factory emission control devices; they are considered "direct replacement" parts. Such parts do not require a CARB Executive Order (EO) since they are not "add on" or "modified" parts. A'PEX exhaust systems are "functionally identical" to the OEM parts during emission tests. Sound levels are tested on stock vehicles before the product release to ensure compliance with the 95dB limit."
I know this is rather arbitrary considering different setups will yield different results, but this is very reassuring.

Shiiiiiizzzz... I've got OEM exhaust with a big f'ing hole in the muffler (looks like the PO hit it on a rock) and it rumbles "nicely". If I didn't prefer a quiet exhaust system, I'd probably just leave it be!
Hmmm... that reminds me... my Comanche has about 3 holes in it's exhaust system

You guys have huge fart cans sticking out the back of your hatch. Honestly what do you expect cops feed on guys like you. I bet the cops wouldn't even think twice about looking at a bmw's exhaust because kids don't put fart cans on them, yet.........
Funny you should say that. I get hassled a lot too, but never for my exhaust. It's a combination of the exhaust, drop, rims, paint that catches attention. Even clean cars that are considered "sleeper" status are hassled a lot by cops. A 20 year old Honda with clean paint, a drop, rims, and a quiet exhaust will obviously catch more attention than an equally clean bimmer.
Point is, I've been pulled over and popped a few times rolling around with my BC-spec II silencer out but the cops have never given me a ticket for my straight-pipe exhaust. Then again, I don't rev past 5k downtown or on busy city streets.
