Default K & N Drop-In

So I've seen some videos and used the search function to read about drop-in air filters...

Do they really create that much of a difference? Some opinions say no performance increase but better gas mileage, other opinions say the opposite.

Looking for an educated opinion from someone whos actually dropped one in.

Beware that to gain any additional airflow through any filter media of the same surface area, filtration efficiency has to be sacrificed. You need to determine if the possible benefits outweigh the negatives (ie, ingesting dirt into the cylinders that may increase wear). As for increased fuel economy, I doubt the claim. The engine is constantly tuned by the ECU for various throttle conditions. The insignificant difference in air flow a "performance" air filter may provide is well within the normal variations the ECU deas with.

I dropped a k&n filter in about a month ago. I could instantly feel a difference. There isn't a greater amount of power. The acceleration just feels smoother. And I get 1 mpg better gas mileage! Don't forget, it sounds better too. Worth every penny to me.

I've had a K & N drop-in for almost a year now. I noticed an audible difference when I put it in but as far as horsepower I didnt really feel ****. IF there is any increase its not pushing more than a couple HP which is completely undetectable unless you've got the car strapped to a dyno. As for the MPG issue I'm unsure, it was never enough of a difference for me to notice if it did help or hinder.

My main reasoning for buying foam element air cleaners is the fact that you can clean them and basically never have to buy a "new" filter. If you're looking for performance gain's I'd say a drop-in filter is not ideal.
