Ok, so a buddy of mine is looking to sell his bike to another buddy of mine who is a closer friend. The guy who is looking to buy the bike has been riding a 650 enuduro, has MSF, gear, and license.

The bike that is wanting to be sold is a 98 996 superhawk VTR 1000F.

My question to you guys, is; i have no clue about this bike. I know it is a torque monster, i want your inputs on if you think it would be an alright bike for a semi experienced rider, who has a level head. Honest opinions needed.

This is the guys' for sale thread on our local site if you wanna take a look at mileage, and price, and condition, and let me know further if you think its good or not.

http://www.driven2modify.com/s...12674

Any and all input is welcome. I don't want to tell my friend to get this bike and it wind up being the reason he goes to meet the big man upstairs. But he has rode that enduro pretty smoothly.

EDIT: He's asking 4k for it with 11k miles and its been down once.

Going from a thumper (even though it's a 650) to a liter Twin is a noticeable difference...not much in weight, but more in terms of power.

I went from a 225 to a 400 and I felt a difference..in handling, power delivery, etc...If he has a level head I don't think he will be bad with it, but if it was me, I would look into another smaller streetbike first.

Do you know which model is his 650?

I think he is asking way too much. If it was a newer model, then it might sell for around 4k.

Herb and #9 both got rid of their Superhawks and are on to better things. Does that give any hint?

The Superhawk is a fun bike. It's not very sporty compared to the latest superbikes, though, so if that's what your friend is looking for, he might be disappointed.

$4k is about the going "asking" rate. I've seen them sell for $3k in MINT condition.

For the damage it has suffered, $4k is quite a lot. Perhaps he's expecting to get bargained down?

I'd also want to know if the regulator/rectifier has recently been replaced. Not a deal-breaker, but that is a weak-point on the Superhawk. Some people replace the R/R with a GSXR unit for better cooling.

Also, the cam-chain tensioners are known to go bad. it may not be a problem with a bike that only has 11k miles. Some people replace both CCTs with the OEM versions, and some go with the manual CCTs from APE.

Forgot to mention - the cruising range is fairly pitiful on the Superhawk. I routinely got 90-100 miles out of a tank. It's a thirsty bike and it has a small tank.

But, it's got a lot of....personality (such a dirty word)...and it wheelies real easy.

Ok, glad that was stated, i'm sure he will definately shy away from it, because he's looking to have a bike to cut down on his commute costs. Not ride it all the time. But ride it when permitting.

Commuting on my Superhawk meant filling up every day for gas.

At least on the 900RR I can make it two days.

Do you have such...interesting...screen-names on all forums?

Loved the superhawk but it served its purpose and as Marm said I've moved onto something better. Not a bad bike but I grew out of it.

this actually dates back to OOOLLLDDDD H/a.net times in the off-topic forum, and the early start of off-topic.net. There was a member we always made fun of by the name of Greddy-Ex...so the gay smiley was labeled :greddy: after him.
